A woman who recently completed her hairdressing training says she was happy to give her family free haircuts while still training to build up her skills, but it would appear some of them still expect similar treatment now she's a fully qualified professional.

The new hairdresser, who has eight siblings, currently works for a franchise, with the hope of moving on somewhere more 'exclusive' once she's gained enough experience. The other day, her sister, who she never got along with growing up, texted her to ask if she could bring her kids to the salon for a haircut, as she wanted them to look smart for a school award ceremony.

The stylist told her sister they were 'absolutely slammed', with hour-long wait times, but advised her to just sign in on the app and head on over when it told her to. Unfortunately, things got awkward once she arrived for her appointment.

Taking to Reddit, where she goes by the username u/Hefty-Excuse-6305, the miffed beauty professional recalled: "She came in and she was so rude and just hovering over me the whole time almost like she was waiting got me to screw up. I was told there would be customers like this so as much as she was annoying me I just dealt with it."

After she'd finished with both children, she was surprised when her sister tried to hand her £2.50 ($3) and asked what it was for. Her surprise then turned to alarm when her sister replied that she was giving her a tip, given that the haircuts had been free.

She continued: "I told her actually the haircuts can’t be free, I’m doing this on store property in the middle of the rush. I had to charge her. Without saying a word she grabbed her kids and walked out.

"A really nice lady who apparently was watching the whole thing said I needed to call the police. I said she was my sister but she cut me off and said even more so I need to call the police.

"So I did and they must have been close by because they were there in minutes. They said really there’s not a whole lot that can be done but they said they would take a report and talk to my sister."

Reaching out to fellow Reddit users for advice, she explained that the officers must have paid her sister a visit promptly afterward, given that their family text group 'absolutely blew up with her trying to get people on her side'.

At first, most were on her sister's side but soon switched their position once they understood more about the situation. Regardless, around 'two-thirds' of them still believe that the matter should have been handled within the family, without any police intervention.

One person commented: "You could’ve been fired if you didn’t involve the police. Ask those two-thirds if they’d be willing to lose their job for your sister’s theft."

Another advised: "You can lose your job. It's pretty common for companies to forbid employees to provide services to family and friends because of this (providing free or reduced-priced services either by choice or peer pressure.

"You are in the real world now. Your family needs to understand that. You can provide free services off the clock at their homes, but not at your workplace."
