Hairdresser shares biggest conditioner error that makes hair 'lank' and 'greasy'

We're learning new things about our hair every day now it seems, from the correct type of brush to use on it and how towel drying wrong can cause damage to the hair shaft.

And now a hairdresser has shared another top tip that some might not know and it's all to do with the way you apply conditioner. to your hair.

Ricky Walters, the owner of SALON64 in London, has explained why it would be a big mistake to use conditioner on the top of your head, near the roots.

Speaking to The Mirror, the expert, who often works with famous faces like Nicola Roberts, claimed doing so can make hair look "lank, heavy and greasy".

The expert says conditioner should only be applied to the lengths and ends

Ricky said: "The hair growing out your head at the root right now has only been around for a short amount of time.

"For those with longer hair, the ends grew out your head approximately eight years ago! With this in mind, it's important to treat the two areas separately as I am sure those ends could tell a few stories.

"For the majority of people conditioner is not needed at the roots. It will cause the hair to be lank, heavy and greasy."

He continued: "Only use conditioner through the lengths and ends of your hair for best results and long-lasting glam."

And before you apply your conditioner, you need to give your hair a towel dry, or else your favourite hydrating product could be going to waste.

"There's nothing worse than splashing out on top-quality conditioner to then apply to soaking wet hair straight after washing," Ricky proclaimed.

"The high-end, thicker, luxury conditioners on the market should be applied to towel-dried hair. Long hair can hold a huge amount of water which then dilutes your lovely conditioner, leaving you with nothing but a watery residue."

So what should you do?

He adds: "Shampoo twice, towel dry for two minutes. Apply conditioner, leave for a further two mins and rinse."
