Star Wars Jedi: Survivor sequel will be the prettiest Star Wars game on consoles

Creative director Stig Amussen has teased a jump to Unreal Engine 5 should the story of Cal Kestis be made into a trilogy.

Set to launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S next month – on April 28, 2023, following a six-week delay – creative director Stig Amussen has been doing the publicity rounds for Respawn’s upcoming Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order follow-up, teasing what a future Star Wars Jedi: Survivor sequel could look like. A third entry into this Soulslike spin on the famous sci-fi series hasn’t yet been confirmed by EA, but that hasn’t dashed developer Respawn’s hopes for a trilogy.

“How can we take Cal and the crew to new places beyond what we were doing in the first game?,” he told IGN in a podcast interview. Even more tantalising, though, is the prospect of the franchise moving over to Unreal Engine 5 for the hypothetical game set after Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. “I think it’s a pretty safe assumption,” he said on the topic when asked.

Unlike its predecessor, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is set to only launch on current-gen consoles, leaving the PS4 and Xbox One behind. However, the sequel still entered development too soon after the first game’s release to move to Unreal Engine 5. That said, Cal’s forthcoming Jedi adventure still looks beautiful, with recent trailers showing off new planets, sabre stances and Sith threats to face.

Respawn gave Star Wars: Fallen Order a current-gen upgrade back in June, 2021, with this PS5 and Xbox Series X|S version arriving two years after the game's initial release, and six months into the current-gen consoles' lifecycle . This upgraded iteration sees the game run at native 4K with 30fps in resolution mode, or at 1440p resolution with 60fps.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will seemingly tick all the right boxes for a returning fan like me, being the perfect kind of sequel that builds on the original game’s mechanics to result in an adventure more ambitious and grand in scope. However, I will admit that not running on Unreal Engine 5 does hamper my excitement; especially since I’ve been crying out for more current-gen only games to truly take full advantage of the extra oomph in power the PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles make possible.

There’s no doubt in my mind that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will get a sequel. So I’m hopeful that as per Amussen’s comments, a third game in this trilogy will indeed be the prettiest Star Wars game we’ve ever seen. It’s a shame that such a prospect is still multiple years out, but I’m sure this next game is primed to surprise players like myself in other aspects.
