'I accidentally invited my boss on holiday - now it is too late to backtrack'

When you're having a stressful time, there's nothing better than a weekend escape to get away from it all. But be careful who you invite.

One worker learned this lesson the hard way after accidentally inviting their boss on a trip.

The tired employee was looking forward to a weekend spent relaxing with friends and expected work would be the last thing on their mind. Unfortunately, the planner unknowingly invited their boss, who happily accepted. With no way to let their colleague down gently, the worker had to follow through with the trip to a remote cabin, with their boss in tow.

What followed was an incredibly awkward weekend, as the employee explained in a post to Reddit.

Writing in the 'Dear Reddit, today, I f****d' up', forum, the holidaymaker wrote: So, I had been planning this weekend getaway with my buddies for months. We were going to a remote cabin in the woods to have some fun, drink some beers, and forget about work for a while. As the weekend approached, I was excited to finally take a break from my stressful job and just let loose.

"But here's where I messed up: I accidentally included my boss in the group message about the weekend getaway. I didn't realize [sic] it until I saw his response in the chat, saying he was excited to join us. I immediately panicked because, let's be real, nobody wants to spend a weekend away with their boss."

Not keen on the plan, the employee hoped to find an out but could not. "I tried to backtrack and come up with some excuse, but it was too late. My boss had already made plans to come with us, and there was no way out of it. So I spent the whole weekend trying to have fun while also keeping a professional demeanor [sic] around my boss. It was the most awkward and uncomfortable weekend of my life," the post concluded.

In response, one commenter said: "Unless you happen to be in a workplace where everyone is already pretty friendly and hang out regularly after work hours, it seems kinda strange that your boss would accept the invitation in the first place. Maybe he's just a bit lonely and was glad to be included in something. Consider it your good deed for the month."

Another agreed: "Poor boss seems to want to bond with the team. Unless he is a terrible person I would have count this as a win for all the parties."
