When you live in a flat with thin adjoining walls, it's best to try and keep the noise down for your neighbours. After all, you'd expect them to offer you the same courtesy. But there's only so much you can do, as most people will agree.

Unfortunately, one family have ended up in a spat with the new parents living next door, as they expect them to live quietly on behalf of their baby.

A reasonable request in most circumstances, these parents have some pretty strong demands, however. They were annoyed when their neighbours used a hoover during the middle of the day, and they once complained about the noise caused by food frying in a pan.

At her wit's end, the daughter of the family living next door took to Reddit to complaint about the demands that she finds unfair. In her post, the 16-year-old explained she is homeschooled and that her family's flat has 'paper thin' walls. She also said she does her best to keep noise to a minimum but that the parents still complain.

"I've tried to be as courteous as possible by making little noise in case the kid is napping. At night, I turn the TV down to a reasonable volume, sing during my afternoon walks, no arguing loudly, etc. But lately, I feel like the neighbors are trying to take advantage of our consideration," she wrote.

Her post continued: "About a week ago, my mom was making dinner and she was frying it in the pans, and our neighbors came knocking on our door and told her to keep the noise down.

"She told them she was in the middle of cooking dinner, and she would be done soon, but the neighbors just said, 'It better be soon.' The second occurrence happened was when they came knocking on our door because according to them, I was 'shouting' when really, I was responding to my teacher's question."

Unfortunately, the dispute did not end there, and the parents threatened to report their neighbours to security. Following the most recent spat, the teen lashed out at the parents, prompting her post online.

Keen to know if she'd been in the wrong, she explained: "Yesterday was when s*** hit the fan. The night before, my mom asked me if I could vacuum while she was away at work, and I told her I would handle it. I started the vacuum around my lunch break in case there were other neighbors sleeping late, and not even a minute in, I heard the baby start crying.

"I then heard loud banging on my front door and when I looked through the peephole, it was the mother, looking beet red. I opened the door and asked her if she needed anything and she said, 'You need to turn the volume down on that machine of yours!' Uh… it’s a vacuum. There's no volume button!

"I tried to explain that to her, but she continued shouting. 'My husband and I have been nothing but nice to you and all your family do is be loud!' I lost it said, 'WE’RE the ones who’ve been nice to you! But the moment we go on about our daily lives, you start complaining! You can’t expect the whole world to go quiet because you have a kid, so suck it up and deal with the noise!'

"I shut the door and went back to cleaning. Later on, a few other neighbors stopped by and said they heard what happened and that I was being rude and b*****. But when I told my parents, they both said they were on my side and that I was just doing my chores." The teen added that 'part of me feels guilty'. However, commenters were quick to reassure her that it wasn't her family being unreasonable.

"Those around you who are saying that you’re in the wrong are being ridiculous. You and the neighbors live in an apartment building with thin walls. Noises will be made and heard by all. That’s just a fact with living with a bunch of people around you. Your parents are telling you that you’re in the right because you are," read one reply. A second added: "None of your noises are out of the ordinary or out of the timezone where its appropriate to be loud."
