Netflix’s real-life Squid Game is said to have got off to a rocky start as hundreds of contestants battle it out in the hopes of winning a huge £3.8m prize.

Touted as the biggest reality competition series ever, the streaming platform is currently filming the spin-off of the global phenomenon K-drama.

Squid Game: The Challenge will see 456 players compete through a series of games and challenges which have been inspired by the original show.

Yet as Netflix brings the hit show to life, contestants on the reality show were reportedly left in a perilous state after the first round of the game show amid ‘freezing’ conditions.

The filming of the gruesome hit show spin-off is being kept under wraps, but it is understood at least one contestant was stretchered off and others suffered frostbite as a result of the challenges, amid -3C temperatures.

A contestant on the show told The Sun the scene was ‘like a warzone’ as hopefuls left ‘in tears’ after arriving with hopes of clinching the multi-million cash prize.

It is understood producers were filming the first game, Red Light, Green Light, which features as the first game in the Netflix drama, when contestants fell unwell.

One player told The Sun: “Even if hypothermia kicked in then people were willing to stay for as long as possible because a lot of money was on the line. Too many were determined not to move so they stood there for far too long.

“People were getting carried out by medics but we couldn’t say anything. If you talk then you’re out. Some people couldn’t move their feet because it was so cold.

“We ended up standing there for 30 minutes between takes. Some were crawling by the end. One was carried out on a stretcher.”

Netflix said: “Netflix, Studio Lambert and The Garden takes contributor care as one of its highest priorities and regular toilet breaks, water and food are categorically standard practice on production.

“All precautions were taken to ensure the game was played safely.”

Producers have said that the contestants will be seen deciding their strategies, alliances, and character, which will be put to the test while competitors are eliminated around them.

While the stakes will be high and there will be a similar stress and pressure that was exerted on the players in the TV series, those who lose will not be leaving in a black coffin with a red ribbon tied around it.

Squid Game: The Challenge will be a 10-episode competition series and is filming in the UK.
