British teenager drowns in Swiss lake during family holiday
A brit teenager has drowned in a lake in Switzerland on a family holiday.
The 17-year-old was visiting Lake Cauma near Flims with his family on Thursday evening.
He got into difficulty at around 5.45pm on Thursday while trying to swim to shore from an island in the middle of the lake, according to the Graubünden Cantonal Police.
The boy was swimming towards the sunbathing area when visitors noticed him go under.
Several people rushed to aid him, some swimming and others by canoe, to bring the boy to shore.
Paramedics on the scene began resuscitation immediately.
The Flims Fire Department was also on the scene.
The boy was then taken to Chur Cantonal Hospital, but died in hospital later that evening.
Police and public prosecutor’s office are investigating what led to the swimming accident.
Lake Cauma is a popular tourist spot and is considered one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in the country.
It comes after an NHS doctor died while falling from her bike “at speed” while on a cycling trip in Switzerland.
Dr Anannya Kar, 51, died from her injuries two days after the horror crash near Bern – as her husband paid tribute to the “bubbly” mum-of-two.
Heartbroken Dr Partha Kar, 52, said she had left an “incredible hole” in his life following the deadly smash.
Her partner was told she had fallen on May 24 before he rushed to the hospital she was taken to in Bern.
The consultant gynaecologist was an experienced cyclist, according to Partha, and used to bike every day when she was at home.
Devastated Partha said: “She had a big passion for cycling – she had been recently to Italy (to cycle).
“She had also gone to Switzerland, Lucerne, Bern, that’s where she had gone with colleagues.”
He added: “I think, from what I understand, she fell at speed.”
Tragic Anannya, who was airlifted to a hospital in Bern, was described as “bubbly”, “incredibly kind” and “very focused on her kids”.
Partha described how she received “fantastic care” but that doctors couldn’t save her.
The couple moved to the UK around the turn of the millennium, and had both worked for the NHS since then.
A memorial was held at the couple’s home in Southsea, Portsmouth last month.
