Buying new gym gear can be exciting, especially when you get an outfit that is comfortable and functional for your workout.

Exercising in clothing that is uncomfortable or restrictive can impact your ability to lift, squat or run and therefore make your time spent in the gym less effective.

Many women will wear shorts or leggings with a simple sports bra to keep cool while exercising, as is commonly seen in TikToks and in the gym itself. However, one woman was shocked when her gym told her that outfit was "inappropriate" and she couldn't wear it to visit that location.

In her TikTok, Janay Lainer - @lifewithlaniers - shared her unpleasant experience with a staff member at her gym who told her that they found her outfit "inappropriate".

Despite this, Janay can be seen strutting into the gym in her bra and leggings fit - with the caption: "When your gym won’t allow you to wear a sports bra because it’s inappropriate."

She revealed her sneaky way around this, adding: "So you go after hours when nobody is there." While many gyms are now 24-hour venues, some have un-manned hours or will close after a certain time.

The dedicated gym goer can be seen keying in her code to gain access to the building, with the caption: "Take that."

"You've got to be kidding me," said one of the comments, which prompted Janay to reveal: "Girl I wish I was kidding she embarrassed me and all."

Another defiant supporter added: "That's all I would wear now." Someone else commented clapping emojis, who the gym goer said inspired her with her "sassiness".

A fourth said: "If it's all adults why should that matter" before correcting themselves and writing: "Why should it matter but especially with adults."

"Dang where do you go because I’m pretty sure mine doesn’t have this rule," another woman added.

Gyms do sometimes have a dress code, with many banning jeans, flip flops or other non-sportswear. Some will stipulate that t-shirts must be worn over sports bras but this is often hard to regulate as many bras look like crop tops.

In other gyms even football shirts will be grounds for removal from the location, so if there is any doubt check the rules when signing up.

Most of the time common sense is the best indicator of whether or not you can wear something to the gym. As long as you are in sportswear and closed-toe sports shoes there should be no reason for staff members to question your outfit.
