Madonna has prompted outrage over a religious-inspired photoshoot for Vanity Fair, which has been described as "offensive" and "blasphemy" by its critics this week.
The singer, 64, has posed for the 'icon issue' of the publication, which is a collaboration between the French, Italian and Spanish editions of the monthly magazine.
The photoshoot includes Madonna resembling Jesus at the Last Supper, surrounded by twelve apostles. She's seen wearing a cream garment with a red cover over the top.
Another photo - which appears on the cover of the special issue - appears to show the Grammy Award winner resembling Virgin Mary, wearing an extravagant headpiece.

Others have shared their opinion that it is "blasphemy," with some critics on Twitter saying that it was "mocking" Jesus.
One person tweeted recently: "Absolute blasphemy depicting Mary and Jesus on your covers. Disgusting." Another said that the performer was "mocking Jesus!"

Madonna is no stranger to having sparked controversy, with her music video for single Like A Prayer, for example, prompting backlash from religious groups in 1989.
The latest outrage comes amid the news earlier this week that Madonna will embark on a world tour later this year, which will celebrate her four decades in the music industry.
The 'icon issue' is a collaboration between the French, Italian and Spanish editions of the publication (Vanity Fair)The tour - titled Celebration - is set to feature 35 dates and is expected to see the singer perform some of the greatest hits from her career, which launched back in 1982.
It is set to begin in July and is scheduled to conclude in December. The tour will include a performance in London, as well as in other cities in Europe like Barcelona and Paris.
The 'icon issue' of Vanity Fair Italy is out now. The edition for Vanity Fair Spain and France will be out on January 25.
