Marcus Rashford only made a short cameo as Manchester United collapsed to lose 4-3 at Chelsea on Thursday evening but has still received severe criticism from fans

Manchester United fans have ripped into Marcus Rashford after being left fuming with his efforts against Chelsea.

The forward started on the bench in Thursday’s 4-3 defeat to the Blues. He was introduced for the final 20 minutes with the Red Devils leading.

Erik ten Hag ’s men then somehow collapsed to lose despite leading deep into stoppage time. Footage of Rashford was shared on social media showing him meandering in the heart of midfield, with a lack of any real effort to press Cole Palmer - who scored twice late on.

The video left a number of fans furious, some of which have demanded the academy graduate be sold. One supporter writing on Twitter said: “I’ve seen enough of Marcus Rashford, it’s time to leave, this brother can’t improve.”

Another added: "Rashford does need to go too. A player half-a***d jogging, playing as a striker for Manchester United, is simply unacceptable. Bare minimum you expect is work rate and he does not provide this. Shocking.”

The criticism continued to come from Red Devils’ fans. One said: "What does he care? Probably on £100,000-a-week. Some elite footballers could not care less what fans think about performances. Amount of money they earn to them they will still get paid no matter the performance on the pitch."

Another added: “Yeah but he does all that jogging but then when the ball goes into the midfield and he is literally 3 yards away from it he doesn’t up the intensity, that’s his opportunity to not allow Palmer an easy pass and time to pick it but he lets him.”

The criticism coming Rashford’s way is just the latest chapter in what has been a difficult season. After scoring 30 goals last term, he has scored on just eight occasions this season.

Man United boss Erik ten Hag leapt to the 26-year-old’s defence after the defeat to Chelsea and claimed he was as committed as ever. Speaking after the game at Stamford Bridge, the Dutchman said: “Lately his form is progressing.

“He has a big motivation, because he wants to be successful with us. He wants to win trophies and score goals. But he wants to win and to contribute and we have a chance with the FA Cup.

“He wants to fight for a Champions League spot and the Euros are coming. So his motivation should be high. Before Brentford he scored three goals in three games.”

Rashford will be aiming to respond to his critics this weekend. The Red Devils take on fierce rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.
