TOWIE's James Lock in 'constant battle' with himself as he talks health issue

The Only Way is Essex star James Lock has opened up about being in a "constant battle" with himself in relation to his body image amid a discussion about body dysmorphia.

The reality TV star, 37 - who left the ITVBe show last year after having joined the cast in 2013 - was a guest on Good Morning Britain earlier. James was interviewed on the ITV show by Susanna Reid, 53, and her co-host Ed Balls, 57.

During the interview, James spoke about "getting carried away" with cosmetic surgeries. It was suggested that he has body dysmorphia and James described his experience with body image as like a "constant battle with yourself". The NHS describes body dysmorphia as "a mental health condition where a person spends a lot of time worrying about flaws in their appearance". It adds that the condition can "seriously" affect a person's life, including their work.

Discussing his experience, James said on Thursday morning: "Like a couple of days ago I'm doing a shoot and I'm finding fault. So something that would have took ... taking a couple of pictures would have took half an hour - the next minute it takes a full day because I'm finding fault in everything."

He told Susanna: "I can acknowledge that there's a problem but then I still act a certain way, if that makes sense. So I know [that] sometimes I'm being irrational. I know ... I'm a good looking guy, I'm in good shape but I will still find fault."

"Whether I'm on set or even if I'm just going away on holiday or if I'm doing a shoot for a brand, I will find fault. It's got to a point where I cannot now look at the pictures [from a photoshoot]. My agent will go through the pictures for me." He continued on the show: "I will just send all the images over and let her pick one because if I go through them myself I will find fault in something, in some aspect. It's a constant battle with yourself. Even though you're looking in the mirror, you're not seeing what other people are seeing."

James said that loved ones think he's "a bit crazy," before sharing: "But even when we're y'know [on a set] you have like a duty of care, you speak to a psychologist after for whatever reason, just y'know as part of the protocol. [And] like sometimes they've addressed it and said 'we think you've got like body dysmorphia'. And you sort of half struck it off like 'what are you talking about?' - you just dismiss it. Especially as a man, you just brush it off."

As reported by OK! magazine, the reality TV star also discussed his cosmetic procedures. He said: "I started off with a hair transplant, I've had my ears done [and] my teeth done [...] I've had my eyes done, my nose done. [And then you just get] carried away."

James also said that he "compares" himself to others in the industry, adding: "Whether it's on shows that I've been on, or other shows, we might be all be friends on the show [but] we're actually all in competition [for opportunities]."
