Meghan Markle had quite a sweet bond with the late Queen Elizabeth II amid claims she could "butter her up", with the Duchess of Sussex even calling up her grandmother-in-law on the phone occasionally, as per reports.

The former actress and blogger married Prince Harry in 2018, with the couple's wedding ceremony aired on television for the world to see. Following their nuptials, the Sussexes remained in the United Kingdom until 2020.

The couple then announced they would be stepping back from their royal duties in January 2020, with them moving to America in the summer of that same year after residing in Canada for a short while.

Speaking out in 2017, during the couple's engagement interview, Meghan spoke of her bond with the Queen, who would soon become her grandmother-in-law. "It's incredible, I think, you know, to be able to meet her through [Harry's] lens, not just with this honour and respect for her as the monarch, but the love that he has for her as his grandmother," she said at the time.

She went on: "All of those layers have been so important for me so that when I met her I had such a deep understanding and of course incredible respect for being able to have that time with her. And we've had a really – she's – she's an incredible woman."

Speaking to Newsweek earlier this week, Ingrid Seward, a royal author, touched on Meghan's relationship with the late monarch. She told the outlet: "I was so surprised when I heard the Queen liked Meghan but she did. Meghan's a smart lady whatever people think of her.

"She knew exactly how to butter up the Queen. Even Harry gave us a little glimpse of it by the dogs," she added, with the comment about the dogs referring to how Harry revealed in 2017 that the corgis had a soft spot for Meghan in an instant.

During the couple's engagement interview, Harry gushed: "The corgis took to you straight away," with Meghan adding that they were "just laying on my feet during tea, it was very sweet".

And a year later, in 2018, a source told Us Weekly: "[Her Majesty] has a brilliant sense of humour. That’s one of the first things that brought her and Meghan closer. It’s that warm side of her that has made Meghan feel so at ease."

This came around the time that Meghan and the Queen attended a ceremony to open the new Mersey Gateway Bridge on June 14, 2018, in Widnes, England. This public appearance was then followed by Harry, Meghan and the Queen sitting with each other at the Queen's Young Leaders Awards Ceremony at Buckingham Palace on June 26.

And then, following Megxit in 2020, a source said that Queen Elizabeth "was hoping that they’d return, but there is not much she can do about it and accepts their decision", with this coming to light in 2021.

Elsewhere in her recent chat with Newsweek, royal author Ms Seward added that she doesn't believe the Queen saw much of the Sussexes, but revealed: "Meghan being American used to ring her up, which a lot of her children don't do.

"I think she kept in touch with her because she knew it was important and then she met Meghan's [mother]," she added.
