Brits love a Chinese takeaway as a weekend treat, but how authentic is the food we're eating?

Yinrun Huang, who became popular when she appeared on the Big Brother reboot in 2023, has posted a video to her TikTok showing a huge plate of UK Chinese takeaway food - and her verdict on the dishes has left Brits feeling vindicated. It went down especially well with fans following a string of Americans slating the cuisine last year.

"British people do make brilliant Chinese takeaway", she reassured. "As a Chinese girl who is living in the UK, I've never tried a Chinese takeaway yet. I'm going to try them, and rate them one by one", she explained, as she showed her plate which was stacked full of yummy treats.

First up, she tried salt and pepper chips, which are a firm favourite with many Brits. And it turns out Yinrun loved them as well, especially since they were covered in curry sauce. She referred to them as "top-notch", saying there was "no more comment needed", and she rated them 10 out of 10.

Salt and pepper chicken was up next, with Yinrun asking: "Who can say no to salt and pepper? I can't." She then rated the chicken an eight out of 10. Then, she wanted to "know whether the egg fried rice from the takeaway tastes as nice as mine", as she took a huge mouthful of the savoury treat. "Just about", she exclaimed, while rating the rice a seven, as she thinks hers is "better."

Chow mein was next on the menu, and as she slurped up the noodles gushed "mmm!" She said: "Chow mei is the most authentic taste. It tastes literally like from China. Eight for the chow mein." Yinrun then opted to try a spring roll, with some sweet and sour sauce, rating it a six out of 10. She then tried the sweet and sour shredded beef, which looked nice and crispy, giving it a seven.

"Oh! How can I forget?! Prawn crackers!", she exclaimed excitedly, as she bit into one not long after. "This will never go wrong. Eight out of 10", she shared. She then encouraged people to give her recommendations about what to try next.

The impressed review comes after Americans mocked British Chinese takeaway back in 2023, as they ridiculed popular English Friday night picks such as salt and pepper chicken and chicken chow mein. One American took issue with curry sauce being included in an order, while others weren't sure about the popular side dish, chicken balls.

In the comments, someone penned: "It's obviously not authentic Chinese food but it's still delicious", with another praising: "I am starving watching this", to which Yinrun replied: "This is your sign to treat yourself."

Others urged Yinrun to share her recipe for egg fried rice, as she'd claimed she could cook better than a takeaway. Many TikTokers also professed their love for salt and pepper chips, and Yinrun agreed.
