Britain's best fish and chip shops unveiled - did your local favourite win gold?
Brits can now find out if their local chippy ranks among the best in Britain, including best takeaway and best restaurant.
As expected, competition to be named the best in the UK was fierce, with shops from up and down the UK receiving nominations. And after secret taste tests were carried out, the National Federation of Fish Fryers (NFFF) chose the top three winners from its final list of 10 takeaways and five restaurants.
The award ceremony, hosted by comedian Rob Beckett, celebrated excellence throughout the fish and chip industry on home shores and - for the first time this year - international ones too. But it was Ship Deck in Caerphilly, Wales, that took the crown of Takeaway of the Year at a glitzy award ceremony in London.
Ryan Hughes, who runs the takeaway with his partner Kimberley, opened the shop four years ago. Punters can pick up a regular cod for £6.90, whilst a medium portion of chips costs £2.45. The National Fish and Chip Awards' judging panel of 'a-fish-onados' assessed the chippies not just on their food, but also their commitment to environmental sustainability, their product knowledge and their responsibilities as employers.

Dad furious after boy, 6, orders over $1,000 of takeaways while his mum is outSpeaking about the event, awards organiser and NFFF president Andrew Crook said: “The National Fish and Chip Awards 2024 has been a remarkable experience to be part of. Our winners and finalists have put their all into making their fish and chip businesses stand out for all the right reasons.
“We are bursting with pride for our winners and other contenders. It’s a privilege to be able to support and encourage them further and they should all be proud of what they’ve achieved. Fish and chip teams rarely have a moment to pause but we hope everyone takes some time to enjoy the celebrations ahead of getting back to what they do best.”
