A charming seaside town is known for its stunning sandy beaches and an ancient castle.

Bamburgh has been a backdrop in Hollywood films and is regularly recognised as the UK's favourite coastal spot. Last spring the Northumberland beach won the honour for the third year running, as voted by over 4,000 people in a survey conducted by Which?

Bamburgh is undeniably special and truly deserving of this accolade, with its most striking feature being the breathtaking scenery. A two-mile stretch of pristine white sand lines the coastline, offering ample space for sunbathers, brave wild swimmers and playful dogs.

One visitor described the beach to Which? as having 'super-soft sand that stretches as far as the eye can see, and there is plenty of space, so the beach never feels crowded'.

Above the beach, walking paths meander through lush grass and thick vegetation, with wooden benches scattered along the way. Survey respondents said this coastal gem was perfect for those seeking some peace and quiet, whether from the vantage point of a scenic bench or while strolling along the sand in the early morning light.

The Northumberland coast is also teeming with wildlife, with of birds, seals and even dolphins and whales regularly spotted from the beach.

The seaside town of Bamburgh is known for its castle that sits high above a sandy beach, overlooking the North Sea and the Farne Islands. The castle, which was once occupied by Celts, has changed hands many times over the past 1,000 years. The Grade I listed building recently hosted Harrison Ford for the filming of Indian Jones and the Dial of Destiny. It's also been featured in Transformers: The Last Knight, The BFG, MacBeth and The Last Kingdom.

Another attraction in Bamburgh is the Grace Darling museum. Grace, a lighthouse keeper, became a national hero after she bravely saved nine members of a paddle steamer crew caught in a storm near the town. The museum offers a glimpse into Grace's life, her heroic rescue, and her status as a national heroine.

Bamburgh is also an ideal base for exploring the county on foot. Nearby towns include Belford, Newton-by-the-Sea and Seahouses, which is just three miles away. Off the coast, the Farne Islands are home to more than 40,000 pairs of puffins, terns, guillemots and eider ducks.

Visitors can usually visit the islands to see the famous seabirds, but they are currently closed until the end of summer due to a bird flu outbreak. Despite this, local boat companies will still run sail-around tours. This includes Billy Shiel Farne Island Boats, a family business that has been offering boat trips to the islands and Holy Island since 1918.
