Gaining weight doesn't mean your diet and workouts are failing.

It can feel extremely discouraging when you put a lot of time and effort into losing weight and you can't see much progress - but one personal trainer has urged people to not feel disheartened when they step on the scales and not see the results they had hoped for.

Infact, gaining a little weight overnight is seen as "perfectly normal" and doesn't mean your diet and gym routine is "failing" according to ‌Jess Suthard, a trainer at Goal Plans powered by MuscleFood.com and there are reasons this can happen.

She claimed that overnight weight is not unusual, and it can actually be caused by things such as dehydration and a lack of sleep - so it's not something to worry over. Jess added that other factors could be eating later in the evening, increasing your carb intake, doing an intense gym session or feeling stressed can impact your weight as well.

We all know our weight can fluctuate, and some more than others, but the expert urged people to not worry about what the scales say, as they "shouldn't be the only way to judge if your fitness programme is working." Instead, she suggested taking "regular measurments" and taking note of how clothes feeel on your body.

"Our bodies are amazing machines and we have to look after and nurture them. Adding weight overnight really isn't anything to be concerned about and certainly isn't a reason to switch up your diet or fitness routine. It's also not a reason to stop doing the things we all love. Eating out and increasing our carb intake can both cause overnight weight gain - but who doesn't love a nice meal out and a bit of extra pasta or bread at dinner?

‌Weight fluctuations are expected, even if you're following a strict calorie controlled diet. And scales and weighing yourself is not the only way to check how you're doing. What's important is to take stock of how you feel and start taking other steps like measurements so you can see the changes to your body - even if the scales can't."

‌Jess then revealed some of the reasons you may gain weight overnight - and why it's not something to worry about.

‌1. Intense workout

Jess explained that doing intense workouts mean your body needs to recover overnight, as the body will repair "any tiny tears and stresses put on your muscles, which may mean a little overnight weight gain."‌

2. Poor night's sleep

We all know how important it is to get a good night sleep for our wellbeing, but Jess also stated that it could be the reason people gain weight. She said: "If you have a bad night's sleep you may find you're a little heavier in the morning due to water retention."

‌3. Dehydration

"If you don't drink enough water, your kidneys start to conserve water and you gain water weight. Start sipping again and everything will get back to normal. Staying well hydrated is a must for overall health and wellness," Jess advised.

‌4. Eating out

This one may be a little more obvious, but going out and eating and drinking can be a reason for overnight weight gain, as the expert noted: "Alcohol dehydrates your body, meaning it holds on to more water."

‌5. Digestion out of sync

Looking after our bodies and eating foods that can help digestion may help to lose weight and banish any unwanted toilet issues. Jess shared: "Getting enough fibre in your diet is important. If you don't, you may find it difficult to go to the toilet."

6. Eating later in the evening

Just like going out for food and drinks, eating later than normal can show up on the scales the next day. But Jess reassured that this is "perfectly normal".

‌7. Increase in carbs

Everyone is guilty of over indulging in carbs every now and then which can lead to feeling bloated, and Jess noted this can be a factor of gaining weight over night and said: "As quickly as this happens, the weight will go again."

‌8. Your period is due

One unavoidable factor for women is when their period is due, and Jess explained: "Pre-period weight gain is normal. Every woman is different - you may gain weight just before your period is due or on the first day."

‌9. Feeling stressed

We all know stress can wreak havoc on our bodies, but it can also be a reason to gain weight. "If you're stressed, your body holds more water as it responds to the demands you're putting on yourself. This too is normal," Jess assured.
