Stan Collymore reckons there’s no point promising to carry out a forfeit if Wout Weghorst proves him wrong and goes on to become a hit at Manchester United — simply because he won’t.

News of United’s interest in the Dutchman came as a major shock and they finally got a deal to take him on loan for the rest of the season wrapped up late last week. United boss Erik ten Hag had been targeting a striker since Cristiano Ronaldo ’s exit became a certainty.

But the fact Weghorst — who spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Besiktas from Burnley — was his chosen striker has stunned many onlookers, Collymore included. The Mirror Sport columnist said: “Wout Weghorst? I mean, what the, er, heck?

“Is that where Manchester United, the world’s so-called biggest club, are now, the bargain basement at Poundland?

“I had a lot of United followers saying trust the process on social media of late but this is a bloke who’s already on loan somewhere from Burnley. And you can’t go from the Turkish Super Liga to one of the old’s biggest clubs and be expected to do this business.

“He’s a presser, a big lump. United are supposed to play at the Theatre of Dreams but it’ll be the Theatre of Screams given they’re trying to sign Frankenstein.

“There’s nothing about him that’s refined enough for United and if he becomes a club icon I will… Actually, don’t worry, he won’t.”

Weghorst was thrilled to sign for Ten Hag and United. He said: “I feel privileged to be joining Manchester United.

“I've played against the club in the past and it's a fantastic feeling to now have the chance to pull on the famous red shirt.

“I've seen United's progress under Erik ten Hag this season and can't wait to start playing my part in pushing the team towards its aims.

“Whatever happens in the next few months, I can promise to give everything to the club for as long as I am here.

“I thank everyone who has played a part in getting me to this stage, and now I am looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting involved straight away.”
