Making changes to your weekly food shop could revolutionise your health.

That's the claim being made by Doctor Michael Mosley - who is known for popularising the 5:2 diet and creating the Fast 800 diet - who has shared five secrets that could help improve the quality of your weekly shop for the benefit of your health. By avoiding certain supermarket aisles, making lists and sticking to them, and being careful of products labelled as low fat, you could improve your health without having to change too much when it comes to what you buy. What's more, you can make all these changes as early as your next food shop without having to do anything else.

Dr Mosley and his team at the Fast 800 website put together five tips that will help revolutionise your supermarket shop, according to Gloucestershire Live, and it all starts with making a shopping list before you head out.

Make a list and stick to it

Start by making a shopping list of what you need to replenish from your fridge and cupboards, as well as anything you need for the week's meals. This will help you avoid impulse purchases when you're in the supermarket, especially as you can avoid writing down sugary snacks like chocolate that you might be tempted to pick up without sticking to a list.

Avoid the snack aisles

If you've made a list, then there shouldn't be any reason for you to be tempted down the aisle full of chocolates, sweets and crisps in the first place, but Dr Mosley urged people to avoid these snack aisles at all costs so that you're not tempted by anything they might have on offer.

Choose full fat over low fat

This one might seem backwards, especially if you're following a diet and have been assured that low-fat products are better for losing weight than full-fat ones. However, according to Dr Mosley, choosing full-fat products is better for weight loss, as your body does need some healthy fats to properly function.

Healthy fats found in the likes of Greek yoghurt, milk and olive oil will help to keep you fuller for longer and avoid overeating later in the day. The TV doctor advises eating plenty of healthy fats as part of a balanced Mediterranean-style diet.

Add more fruit and veggies

You should aim to fill up your shopping basket with a variety of fruits and vegetables to support a healthy gut and provide you with a daily boost of vitamins and minerals. Whether you opt for fresh, or frozen, buying plenty of fruits and veggies will mean you’re more likely to reach for them when preparing food at home.

Cut back on ready meals

If you're short on time in the evenings, it can be tempting to buy supermarket ready meals and stick them in the microwave, but Dr Mosley recommends you avoid doing that as much as possible. This is because ready meals can contain hidden sugars that won't be present in the food you cook yourself.

Planning your meals can help if you don't have much time to cook, and you can always batch-cook healthy meals in advance to make your own version of a ready meal that can be reheated throughout the week.
