A strange humming sound is driving locals in a UK town “crazy” as the council says it has “drawn a blank” on the cause.

North East Lincolnshire Council has said that we may never know what is behind the noise that has been going on for years in Immingham. And one resident has claimed that the sound is getting louder.

Some theories have been that it could be coming from a nearby factory, wind farms or even underground cables. It has even led one resident, Chloe Eccles, who has been based in Immingham for six years, to consider moving away as she can’t get away from the noise.

"As the years have gone on I've carried on hearing it and I thought I was crazy but other people can hear it too... especially in the last couple of months, it's got really loud," she reportedly said. "There's nothing that blocks it out, it's constant."

While Chloe told Grimsby Live: "I don’t necessarily know where the noise is coming from, I’ve been given a few ideas from others, but I have no idea. The noise started in 2018 when I used to hear it in Keelby where I lived, but no-one ever believed me and people told me to check my electrics.

"Some people say it’s the wind turbines, others say underground electrics and pipes. I've spoken to various companies and organisations based around here but cannot get to the bottom of it. There’s many of us that are struggling with sleep due to this and it’s affecting people as far as Caistor."

One resident, Christine Neilson, 74, said she first heard the noise several years ago, and that it is so loud that she can hear it through her double-glazed windows. She said: "It is just a humming drone, it's very uncomfortable on the ears and it does keep you awake. If you do manage to nod off, you wake up again and there it is again, humming away.

"It seems to come from the east. It's quite loud - it's not a firework display, but enough to keep someone awake, and I can hear it through my double glazing. It's annoying because I'm losing sleep, and it's just an absolute mystery as to where it's coming from. People in Immingham are fed up of the noise nuisance."

But North East Lincolnshire Council said its investigations had so far "drawn a blank" and suggested that the noise may not be emanating from the borough. A spokesperson said it had received a service request from a resident of Immingham.

The spokesperson said: "That person has been sent a noise record form to complete over a period of two weeks, which is used to look at the times that people hear a noise. The authority is waiting for that to be returned. However, in the meantime the authority is aware that there have been a number of comments on social media about what appears to be an intermittent hum.

"Initial contact with partners operating in the area have so far drawn a blank, although the authority did make the point that it could be coming from outside the borough. It will continue to work with residents if more service requests are received. However, a noise must constitute a Statutory Nuisance for formal action to be instigated."

Meanwhile Dr Matt Barnard, an expert in acoustic ecology said that the noise is likely to be man-made. "My inclination is it will have some sort of industrial source but it will be hard to pin down because sound behaves strangely," he told the BBC.
