A mountain biker has died after a 90ft fall in the Peak District.

A huge rescue operation involving two helicopters, mountain rescue teams, police and firefighters was launched after the male cyclist fell down a hillside during a bike ride with friends.

Tragically the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency services were called to the beauty spot at Derwent Moors at about 6pm on Tuesday, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Both Edale and Woodhead mountain rescue teams responded to the incident at Foulstone Delph off Mortimer Road in the north-easterly part of the Peak District.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance and another helicopter from the Humber Coastguard were also called out.

Local gamekeepers also helped with the operation.

A spokesperson for Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team said: "Callouts like this don’t happen often but when they do, team members remain calm, professional, and respectful.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with the gentleman’s family and friends at this very sad time."

A spokesperson for Edale Mountain Rescue Team added: "Thank you to everyone who gave everything to help the situation, police and fire service, and especially the gamekeepers.

Our thoughts are with the gentleman's family and friends at this very sad time."
