Several popular stores will be closing their doors this weekend in yet another blow to the UK high street.

The British high street has been hit hard over the last few years and retailers have been forced to shut their physical stores due to dwindling sales and higher running costs. Recent figures from the Centre of Retail Research (CRR), which has been monitoring retail trends for more than 25 years, revealed that nearly 120,000 jobs were lost and nearly 10,500 shops closed for good in the UK in 2023.

However, the CRR said most of the year’s closures and job losses had resulted from company restructures and cost-cutting programmes rather than business failures. However, as running costs continue to run high the UK may see further losses on our high streets - this weekend alone five different brands and retailers are closing stores.

Shoppers in Boston, Lincolnshire will see its HMV store close for the final time today. The music and entertainment retailer, whose store is in the Pescod Square Shopping Centre, said the closure was down to "shifting consumer behaviours" and a lack of investment in the Lincolnshire town's retail district according to local reports. Posting on social media the HMV store, thanked its customers for their "loyal support" over the last five years and confirmed the closure date as January 27 2024.

Major supermarkets chains are also seeing closures with Tesco set to shut its Armthorpe store on Mill Street in Doncaster permanently on Saturday, January 27 at 5pm. Shoppers’ nearest store following the closure will be the Wheatley Hills Express branch. In Ipswitch, the Co-op supermarket will be closing for good on Saturday too.

Popular fashion retailer Phase Eight will be shutting its Salisbury branch today as well. Known as the "quintessentially" British fashion retailer, which has around 60 stores in the UK, broke the news to shoppers through a sign in the window which read: "This store is now a clearance store. We will be closing on January 27, 2024."

The British outdoor brand Trespass, which specialises in skiwear, waterproof jackets, fleeces, festival accessories, walking boots and camping gear, will be shutting one of its stores tomorrow on January 28, in Blackburn, East Lancashire. The site, based in the Mall Blackburn, put up signs last year informing customers of the upcoming closure. Trespass has around 230 stores across the UK and over 300 worldwide.
