Newcastle are eyeing a move for USA international Joe Scally if they lose Kieran Trippier to Bayern Munich.

Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel wants a new right-back and fancies reuniting Trippier, 33, with his former Tottenham team-mates Harry Kane and Eric Dier. Newcastle are wary of breaching the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules and may be forced to cash in on Trippier, who cost £12million from Atletico Madrid in January 2022.

It has seen the Saudi-owned club line up potential alternatives for Trippier, who has 46 caps for England but only 18 months left on his contract. These include Scally, 21, who plays as a full-back for Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach and the United States national team, for whom he has made eight appearances.

Scally began his career at New York City FC before moving to Monchengladbach in 2020. The 6ft defender , under contract until 2027, made 30 league appearances during his first Bundesliga season in 2021/22. He has been a regular since with 21 appearances this season for the mid-table side.

Losing Trippier, who has clocked up seven Premier League assists this term, would be a big blow for Eddie Howe and the Magpies, but CEO Darren Eales has already gone on the record to suggest big player sales couldn't be ruled out.

Earlier this month, he said: “It’s difficult to say specifically on certain players, but I can say that if we’re going to get to where we want to get to, at times it is necessary to trade your players. Any decision we make will always be against the backdrop of the medium to long-term benefit for the club.

Newcastle are set for a relatively quiet January window as they look to be compliant with the Premier League rules which have seen Everton and Nottingham Forest charged this week.

Eales said Newcastle want to talk about the viability of those rules, adding: “How do you protect the risk of clubs spending beyond their means and their community assets going into liquidation and disappearing, while still allowing clubs with the means and the ability to spend to be upwardly mobile? That’s always the tension.

“How do you balance the ability for clubs to be progressive, because that’s what owners coming in would want and fanbases want? I think there’s many different ways to tackle that problem, and I’m sure that’ll be something that gets discussed in the coming years.”
