Murder investigation launched after inmate found dead in Wheatfield Prison
Gardai have launched an investigation after an inmate was murdered in a Dublin prison.
We have learned that officers believe the man was stabbed to death in his cell at Wheatfield Prison in west Dublin late on Thursday night.
It’s understood the victim, who was aged in his 30s, was from south west Dublin and was serving a sentence at the prison.
A spokesman for the Irish Prison Service this morning confirmed it was carrying out its own investigation into the inmate’s death.
He said: “The Irish Prison Service can confirm a death in custody at Wheatfield Prison on 13 August 2026.
“All deaths in custody are investigated by the Irish Prison Service, the Inspector of Prisons and An Garda Síochána, where circumstances warrant.
"The cause of death is determined by the Coroner’s Office. The Irish Prison Service wish to express our condolences to the deceased’s family and friends.
“Next of kin have been informed.”
Gardai have confirmed they are investigating "all circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body of a man in his 30s" and that the results of a post-mortem examination will determine the direction of the investigation.
A garda spokesperson said in a statement: "Gardaí are investigating all circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body of a male (in his 30s) on Thursday 13th of August 2026 in Wheatfield Prison, Clondalkin, Dublin 22.
"A Senior Investigating Officer has been assigned to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of the male.
"A Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to support the family of the deceased. The services of the Garda National Technical Bureau have been requested.
"The Coroner’s Office has been notified. Investigating Gardaí await the results of a post-mortem to determine the direction of the investigation."
