Guglielmo Vicario used to hit the town until the early hours of Saturday morning as pre-match preparation.

Now there's only one glamour club that tickles his fancy every weekend after swapping late-night partying for Premier League clean sheets at Tottenham. Life was so different for Spurs' No.1 during a loan spell with Serie D side Fontanafredda a decade ago. But the experience has helped educate Vicario on what it takes to succeed at the highest level.

The Italian shot-stopper said: "Because we trained four times during the week and then played on Sundays, we would all have dinner together and then go clubbing on a Friday night. It was a big moment to be together and we had a big season.

"It was our first year in Serie D and we didn't get relegated which was a huge achievement for us and a very important experience in my life."

Vicario has since flourished during a meteoric rise to the top table having only made his Serie A debut for Cagliari against Inter Milan in April 2021 following two promotions with Venezia.

The 27-year-old is therefore accustomed to pressure, adding: "Sometimes at the beginning, maybe you are nervous because you have to face situations you never faced.

"Of course, you feel some pressure and you are not too sure about yourself but you just have to go through that and gain that experience. You can then learn and feel more secure about yourself."

Now Vicario, who has "stolen things" from Italian goalkeeping icons Dino Zoff - also born in Udine - and Gianluigi Buffon, will walk out in front of a sell-out Old Trafford crowd, less than three years after debuting inside an eerily empty San Siro.

In the opposition goal is Andre Onana, a pro Vicario respects greatly despite their contrasting starts to life in English football following their respective transfers from Serie A.

Tottenham's £17.2million summer arrival said: "I played against him last season with Empoli against Inter but now it's very different.

"What he did in the league and in the Champions League was impressive. He has big qualities and is a very good goalkeeper. In the career of a ‘keeper, you have to try to stay balanced because there are good and bad moments.

"You can make two mistakes in a row but then you can have a big game and it’s ‘Oh, this ‘keeper is unbelievable’. It’s not easy. You have to appreciate what Onana has done and what he's doing now."

Vicario has big boots to fill in Spurs legend Hugo Lloris and the uncapped Italian has paid tribute to the club's former captain, stating: "I said the day Hugo decided to leave that I would take care with all my possibility to try to make a mark like him. Not to try to replicate what he did because he did incredible stuff.

"I just want to try to commit myself 100 per cent every day and try to give to Spurs fans a lot to remember about me so they have big thoughts about me, too. Football is not for always. You have to take care of your place and to give everything you have.

"People like Hugo did so much for this club and when you leave, you are always remembered in the best way. He did incredibly here."
