A man is on the run having shot a 17-year-old girl by accident in the head on New Year's Eve, it is reported.

The man was playing Russian roulette in a car in Istanbul, Turkey. Melek Nur Ozgener was seriously injured when she was shot in the car, allegedly by 32-year-old Ercan D, as the pair were celebrating together alongside another teenage girl, who is identified as 17-year-old Nisa A. Ercan D is alleged to have yanked out the gun and aimed it at two girls, shouting: "Should I shoot you? Or you?"

However, the distasteful prank resulted in a tragedy, as the gun went off and sent a bullet to Melek's head. She was rushed to hospital by Ercan D, but she died six days later.

Ercan D is still on the run. Melek was buried at the Fatih Mosque on December 7, with many in attendance, according to reports.

As the young girl was laid to rest, there were plenty of tears from her heartbroken friends and family. Melek was buried in the Edimekapi Cemetary following the service.

Ercan D. is still on the run, with local media reporting that he was released from prison four years ago for murder. In Turkey, femicide is a growing problem, especially after the country officially quit the Istanbul Convention in July of 2021.

According to the 2023 Annual Data Report announced by the We Will Stop Femicide Platform, 315 women were killed by men throughout last year. In addition, 248 women were found suspiciously dead.

According to data from the Monument Counter - which is "a digital memorial for women killed by violence" that gets daily updates - 5 femicides have taken place in Turkey so far this year.
