Woman wonders why mum's apple pie 'tastes weird' then checks the tin label

Nothing beats home cooking, especially when you or your family member seem to get it right every time, so when one woman's mum's apple pie tasted a bit "weird", she had to investigate the reason why - and she was left mortified at the truth.

Sometimes, when things enter the spice cupboard, it can be a very long time until they get cleared out. Often, when you get around to spring cleaning, cupboards like this get forgotten, as of course many spices last a long time, so it won't be at the forefront of your mind. But when Sarah McGonagall's mum added 24-year-old nutmeg into the apple pie she was baking - it was obvious.

Sarah took to X, formerly Twitter, to write: "I told my mom that her apple pie tasted a little weird this year, and she goes 'Really? I always use the same recipe. The nutmeg was a bit clumpy, maybe it didn't blend well…' She takes out the jar to show me, and after a very long pause, I say 'Mom…this expired 24 years ago'."

She then attached a picture of the offending jar, which indeed expired in November 2000. Sarah continued: "Anyway, we decided to double-check the rest of the spices in the drawer and it certainly did not disappoint", as she attached another image of a 'herbal blend' which expired in December 1999.

"She started with at least thirty spices. She now has six spices left", Sarah penned. "We also cleared three full shelves of fossilised teas and rediscovered my favorite hot cocoa mix…from when I was a toddler. I cannot stress enough how many of these things expired YEARS before we moved here."

'I don't want children staying up late at weekends - I really need adult time'

In the thread, others added their experiences of things that had gone way out of date, with one writing: "My mom has a jar of celery salt that I swear is from the 80s, and she won't throw it out." Sarah joked: "The decay adds flavour."

Others were more mortified at the fact the year 2000 is now 24 years ago, with one man commenting: "No it didn't! it expired in 2000. That's not 24 ye- oh f**k oh s**t."

"My best friend's family came to Canada from England in the 70s, and brought with them a whole roast chicken in a can. It is now an heirloom", someone joked, and another pointed out that "it was cool for 23 extra years, not bad."
