As the festive season comes to an end and we make our way into 2024, there’s a host of brand-new films and shows heading to streaming services. Whether you fancy the bittersweet end of a long-running sitcom or a gritty new series from an epic superhero franchise, Disney+ has something for everyone to help cure those January blues.

Disney is kicking off the new year with enthralling new shows from the likes of Marvel and National Geographic. Alongside these brand-new original series, the streaming platform from the House of Mouse also boasts one of 2023’s hottest sci-fi blockbusters.

All of this content can be streamed with a subscription to Disney+, which now costs as little as £4.99 a month. This comes with access to loads of top films and shows including the biggest and best Marvel and Star Wars content.

There’s no hidden cost with a Disney+ subscription and it can be cancelled any time. Customers can also save by signing up to an annual subscription rather than paying monthly.

By paying annually, new members can get the equivalent of two months free on Disney+’s Standard or Premium plan, which usually cost £7.99 a month and £10.99 a month respectively. This comes with hit shows like Marvel’s Loki, Star Wars spin-off Ahsoka, and hit reality series The Kardashians and Coleen Rooney : The Real Wagatha Story.

It also includes hundreds of hours of Disney, Pixar and National Geographic content including Encanto, Lightyear and Limitless with Chris Hemsworth. Here, we take a look at the new films and shows launching on Disney+ in January 2024.

Modern Family season 11

A five-time Emmy winner for Outstanding Comedy Series, Modern Family is back for one last outing. The final season of this long-running sitcom picks up once again with the blended family of the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan as seen through the lens of a documentary filmmaker and his crew.

The three families are unique unto themselves, and together they give viewers an honest and often hilarious look into the sometimes warm, sometimes twisted, embrace of the modern family.

Modern Family season 11 is available to stream now.

Marvel’s Echo

Marvel Studios’ Echo centres on Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), a deaf Native American whose ruthless behaviour in New York City catches up with her in her hometown. As a former leader of the Tracksuit Mafia gang, Maya is pursued by the brutal behemoth Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) and his criminal empire.

When Maya’s journey brings her home, she he must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward. Billed by Marvel as “gritty [and] action-packed,” Echo marks the first series under the Marvel Spotlight banner, which will focus on grounded, character-driven stories, while it’s also the first MCU project to be rated unsuitable for children.

Echo is available to stream from January 10.

The Artful Dodger

This darkly comedic new series is set in 1850s Australia in the lively colony of Port Victory, where Jack Dawkins (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) – aka The Artful Dodger – is now a surgeon who still has a penchant for crime. When Dodger’s past returns to haunt him with the arrival of Fagin (David Thewlis), he is lured back into a world of crime.

From heists to life-and-death surgeries, to the harsh realities of the criminal world mingling with the middle ground and gentry, this series is a tale of reinvention, betrayal, redemption, and love with a twist.

The Artful Dodger is available to stream from January 17.

The Creator

From Rogue One director Gareth Edwards comes this epic sci-fi action-thriller set amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence (AI). It centres on Joshua (John David Washington) – a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife – who is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war and mankind itself.

Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory, only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.

The Creator is available to stream from January 17.

Cristóbal Balenciaga

This new drama centres on Cristóbal Balenciaga (Alberto San Juan), an enigmatic and extraordinarily talented man who defied social conventions and revolutionised the world of fashion. The series begins when the titular designer presents his first haute couture collection in Paris in 1937.

Behind him was a successful career in his ateliers in Madrid and San Sebastián, dressing the Spanish elite and aristocracy. However, the designs that set trends in Spain did not quite work in the sophisticated fashion empire that Paris has become, where Chanel, Dior and Givenchy are the benchmark of haute couture.

Guided by an obsession for control in all aspects of his life, Cristóbal Balenciaga would define his style and eventually become one of the most important couture designers of all time.

Cristóbal Balenciaga is available to stream from January 19.

A Real Bug’s Life

Inspired by Disney and Pixar’s 1998 film A Bug's Life, this new series from National Geographic is an incredible adventure into an unseen micro-verse where the forces of nature play out on a miniature scale and where tiny creatures rely on amazing powers and extraordinary alliances to make it through each day. Using cutting-edge filming techniques and the latest science, this series follows the incredible stories of the tiny critters living in worlds beyond imagination – from a jumping spider looking for a home on the streets of New York to a Costa Rican orchid bee’s first day on the job making perfume.

A Real Bug’s Life is available to stream from January 24.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians season finale

Disney’s new adventure series follows its titular hero on a dangerous quest. Outrunning monsters and outwitting gods, Percy (Walker Scobell) must journey across America to return Zeus’ master bolt and stop an all-out war.

After losing his mother, Percy is sheltered at Camp Half-Blood, a sanctuary for demigod children, where he must prove himself and confront his origins once he discovers he too is a demigod and take off into the perils of pursuing enemies in search of the Underworld. In season one’s climactic episode, Mount Olympus beckons and Percy must face his greatest battle yet.

The Percy Jackson and the Olympians season finale is available to stream from January 31.

Assembled: The Making of Echo

Following the launch of Marvel’s Echo, Assembled goes behind-the-scenes of Maya’s own groundbreaking series. Fans can see how the show’s cast and crew learned American Sign Language to create a more inclusive and accessible on-set environment.

The Making of Echo explores how the filmmakers took unprecedented steps to portray Native American culture truthfully – and without artifice – while powerhouse actor Vincent D’Onofrio discusses bringing the Kingpin to monstrous life once more.

Assembled: The Making of Echo is available to stream from January 31.

Choir

This six-part docuseries follows the Detroit Youth Choir as they prepare for the performance of a lifetime. Through their eyes, viewers experience the highs and lows of life growing up in Detroit, navigating the challenges of balancing family, school, and athletics, all while pursuing dreams of taking their talents to the next level and performing on one of the world’s biggest stages.

Choir is available to stream from January 31.
