Liverpool made a good start to 2024 with a chaotic and entertaining win over Newcastle and attention now turns to Arsenal and the January transfer window.

The 4-2 win over Newcastle means Jurgen Klopp’s side are still top of the Premier League before an FA Cup third-round tie against Arsenal on Sunday. Liverpool are waving goodbye to Mohamed Salah and Wataru Endo, who are heading off for international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations and Asian Cup.

Their departures will put a further strain on a squad which has already suffered the losses of Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas to injury. Thankfully, the transfer window is open, allowing Liverpool to bring in reinforcements, should they choose to. Here are the latest pieces of gossip surrounding the club.

PSG respond to Mbappe rumours

The New Year started with eye-catching reports from France, which claimed Liverpool were a ‘credible’ option for Kylian Mbappe in the summer. Mbappe’s contract with Paris Saint-Germain comes to an end in June and his future remains unresolved, with the superstar forward allowed to speak to foreign clubs about a summer move.

Mbappe has flirted with Real Madrid for years, but could Liverpool gazump them this summer? It is an alluring prospect and does stand up to some scrutiny, if Salah heads to the Saudi Pro League.

PSG boss Luis Enrique is not amused by the suggestions. He was asked how he would manage Mbappe during the transfer window on Tuesday and replied: "As I always have done up to this point." He then added: "It isn’t an issue that depends on me. I am not the one to respond to this question."

Reds in ‘front row’ for midfielder

Liverpool underwent huge changes in midfield in the summer, replacing James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and Fabinho with Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch. But could they still be in the market for another midfielder?

Jamie Carragher has suggested they need a holding midfielder and reports in Italy suggest they have their eye on one. Tuttosport says Genoa midfielder Morten Frendrup is of interest and Liverpool are reportedly in ‘front row’ to sign the 22-year-old. Frendrup started out at Brondby in his native Denmark and has made 70 appearances for Genoa since a €3.5million (£3m) move in January 2022.

Carvalho decision made

Liverpool recently cut short Fabio Carvalho’s loan spell at RB Leipzig, but it seems that the attacking midfielder is poised to head straight back out elsewhere. Championship leaders Leicester have contacted Liverpool to suggest a loan until the end of the campaign, but there is a lot of competition.

The Reds could decide to send him out to another Premier League side, with Wolves and Everton also keen on Carvalho. Liverpool want more frequent game time, meaning they might well prefer a lower level. Carvalho has lost his way a little of late, but his ability is clear, having contributed 10 goals in 36 matches for Fulham during their title-winning campaign in the 2021/22 season.
