The young driver of a 170-mile-an-hour sports car has been killed in a midnight crash on an almost deserted road.

The victim, described as in his 20s, was driving a new £70,000 Lotus Emira when he apparently lost control on the A14 near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. The car had left the road and crashed into trees beside the dual-carriageway in the early hours of Friday 22 December.

Police say the passenger - also in his 20s - was taken to hospital but his injuries are now being described as "non life-threatening." The dual-carriageway road was closed for more than nine hours while police carried out a detailed examination of the accident scene.

The supercar, which can do 0-60 in about 4 seconds was the only vehicle involved in the crash. Fire crews and paramedics attended the crash but the driver reportedly died at the scene.

Suffolk police said: “Officers would like to hear from any witnesses to the collision and are also asking any motorists driving in the area at the time with a dashcam in their vehicle to review the footage for any material that may be of assistance.
