Matt Baker confirms his BBC Children In Need challenge is 'sadly' cancelled

Matt Baker's annual BBC Children in Need fundraiser has been cancelled after featuring on the show for the past 13 years.

The Countryfile presenter's Rickshaw Challenge, which typically saw him cycle extreme distances across the nation with youngsters, won't go ahead this year following a shock scrapping. The disappointing news comes as Vernon Kay raised £4million running a 116 miles ultramarathon from Leicester to his hometown of Bolton.

Matt, 45, took to Instagram on Wednesday to announce the cancellation with a heartfelt video message to his 334k followers. Speaking directly to the camera with his 2017 yellow rickshaw wagon behind him, the beloved TV host looked crestfallen as he confirmed that the challenge was "sadly" not happening.

He then took the opportunity to say a "massive, massive thank you" to all the "young riders" who'd been on its iconic saddle as well as the people who had donated over the years, reminding viewers that well over £45 million had been raised through the initiative.

"It’s a real disappointment not to be out riding on the UK streets as the Rickshaw Challenge has been a highlight of Children in Need for me for the past 13 years - I’d like to thank you supporters for all the lives you’ve helped Team Rickshaw change and the impact you’ve had on so many young people. You’ve been incredible!

"Please get behind this years appeal in any way you can - from our Countryfile Ramble to your local fundraisers, as I’ve witnessed first hand, its remarkable what can be achieved when we all get stuck in together."

Matt's followers were quick to react to the disheartening update, with many admitting it's a shame to have cancelled the beloved fundraiser. "So sad, really missing thinking up terrible jokes in lay-bys! But mega huge congratulations for all the millions raised," one person wrote. "Very sorry to hear you aren’t peddling this year I expect there are many disappointed kids who were hoping to do it with you too Never mind Matt a very big thank you for the years of peddling you have done Well done !!!!"

Last year, the Rickshaw Challenge saw Matt joined by a team of five inspiring young people who had been supported by Children In Need funded projects; Sanna, Quinlan, Kai, Alexander and Tabitha. Speaking about the fundraiser in 2021, the Blue Peter hailed it as "always a highlight of my year." "It makes me appreciate all that’s good in our country, celebrate community and shows in spades how we love a randomly bonkers bit of fundraising!" he added.
