Dramatic footage shows moment BMW rammed by cops after rush-hour motorway chase

This is the dramatic moment police repeatedly rammed a runaway BMW during a rush-hour chase along a busy motorway.

Yesterday, a 34-year-old man from Manchester dangerously tried to evade police. After failing to stop in Warrington, he proceeded to speed off and raced onto the M56. He eventually led police onto the M6 before he was forcibly brought to stop in the middle of the carriageway.

Footage captured the terrifying moment as half a dozen police cars raced down the motorway. One horrified passer-by is shepherded aside by one car, as further ahead one car slams into the side of the BMW. Another car tries to push the rogue BMW off the motorway as another police car, and another slam into it. But even then the driver desperately tried to get away from police, only to be spun around.

It’s then that police are able to bring the car to a stop, and officers jump out their cars and race towards the driver. Some officers can be seen scrambling over their own vehicles to get closer to him. The man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop for officers, using a cloned number plate, drug driving (cannabis and cocaine), and drink driving.

This understandably triggered huge delays along the motorway. The man had been wanted by a neighbouring force for perverting the course of justice as well. He remains in custody.

Inspector Anton Sullivan, of the Cheshire police Roads and Crime Unit, said: “While we I appreciate the disruption caused by this incident yesterday, the actions taken by officers were commendable. The individual involved was driving erratically and initially attempted to drive in the wrong direction on one of the busiest motorways in Cheshire during rush hour traffic.

“The danger posed to other innocent motorists was unthinkable and had to be stopped before he got onto Thelwall Viaduct, but thanks to the great work of the team we were able to bring the incident to a safe conclusion.”
