Accused killer sobs in police video as he 'confesses to murdering wife and son'

An accused killer sobs in police footage as he confesses to murdering wife and son, it is claimed.

Alex Murdaugh's attorney can be seen in a newly released clip reacting in shock when the suspect confesses to killing his wife and son in 2021, it has been claimed.

During his second police interview after the murder of his wife and son, his attorney Jim Griffin was seen reacting in shock as he appeared to confess to the crime by saying "I did him so bad".

The man appeared in a video sitting in a police car's passenger's seat, weeping and sobbing as he recalls the gruesome scene.

The alleged confession was a subject of fierce debate during the trial as the defence argued that Murdaugh actually said: "They did him so bad."

The video was only released to the public recently, and before that, the jurors had only heard the audio.

Murdaugh, 54, faces 30 years to life in prison if convicted of murdering his wife, 52-year-old Maggie, and their 22-year-old son Paul near kennels at the family's Colleton County home in South Carolina, US, on June 7, 2021.

Prosecutors have said he killed his family in order to buy time to cover up other crimes for which he is accused, including stealing money from clients and insurance fraud.

When asked by detectives about the traumatic scene he encountered after finding his wife Maggie and son Paul shot dead, Murdaugh did not give any clear answers.

The defence ripped Detective Jeff Croft, who heard the alleged confession, for not following up on it and not asking Murdaugh what he meant by it.

Mr Croft claimed that he made a mental note of it but did not have any evidence to challenge anything that Murdaugh told them.

In a subsequent interview on August 11, Mr Croft did not raise the issue of the alleged confession either.

During the June 10 interview, the detectives discussed funeral arrangements with Murdaugh and expressed sympathy over media intrusion.

Murdaugh has adamantly denied killing his wife and son.

Pathologist Dr Ellen Riemer gave some of the most graphic testimony of the trial Monday as she detailed what she found during the autopsies of the victims.

Paul Mudaugh was shot twice with a shotgun. The first wound skirted his chest with pellets. The second shot was to his head and was so violent it left his skull nearly empty, Dr Riemer said.

Maggie Murdaugh was hit by four or five bullets. The first two wounds happened as she faced the shooter and weren't fatal, but a bullet did hit her kidney, the pathologist said.

“She had projectiles, ammunition going through her left kidney, you can imagine that was a very painful wound and could have caused her to fold over in pain," Dr Riemer said.

While bent over and facing away from the shooter, the fatal shot then went into and out of her chest and into her face.

“It basically destroyed her brain," Dr Riemer said.

While the pathologist stood in front of the jury, drawing on diagrams and detailing her autopsy photographs, Alex Murdaugh sat at the defence table, distraught or crying at times.

The trial is still ongoing, with prosecutors presenting their case and aiming to rest their case soon.

The defence is expected to call its witnesses, including Murdaugh's surviving son, brother, and sister, as well as potentially Murdaugh himself.

The possibility of Murdaugh taking the stand is described as "virtually unheard of" by legal experts.
