Francis Ngannou has been given a better chance of beating Tyson Fury than Conor McGregor was against Floyd Mayweather.

Ngannou is in the final stages of preparing for his boxing debut against heavyweight champion Fury next weekend in Saudi Arabia. The hard-hitting knockout artist parted ways vacated his heavyweight belt and parted ways with the UFC at the beginning of the year in the hopes of securing a big payday in boxing- and he got just that when his fight against Fury was officially announced in July.

McGregor became the first UFC fighter who crossed over to boxing when he challenged Mayweather in 2017, but the Irishman was stopped in 10th round in a fight that sold 4.3million pay-per-view. MMA analyst Dan Hardy believes Ngannou has a better chance of pulling off an upset than McGregor as he told Mirror Fighting: “I would probably lean towards Ngannou in his chances.

“You’re dealing with heavyweights and they can not only throw heavyweight punches but they can take heavyweight punches. We know that about Tyson Fury, there was far less a chance of McGregor catching Mayweather and hurting him because of Mayweather’s defensive skills.

"The force Ngannou can generate can work its way through some guards if it’s thrown correctly. McGregor has a thunderous left hand but he would have to land it a couple of times to get Mayweather out of there. There is more forgiveness for Mayweather against McGregor than there would be for Tyson against Ngannou."

Two-weight world champion Carl Frampton refused to give Ngannou more of a chance than McGregor as he believes the pair of former UFC champions are both novice boxers. "I'd probably say it's a similar chance. Everyone got caught up with the Mayweather vs McGregor stuff, the bookies had it extremely close and maybe I was getting caught up a little bit in it myself," he said.

"I was thinking, 'F*** me, do people know something I don't and McGregor actually has a chance?'. You've got to rationalise things. They are both two guys making their debuts in boxing against Mayweather, the greatest of a generation, and Tyson Fury who is the best heavyweight of the generation."
