PS5 Slim vs PS5 size comparison – the key differences between Sony's consoles

If you were wondering how the PS5 Slim compares to the standard PS5 console in terms of size, look no further, we'll be diving into the details to look at the key differences.

Sony officially announced the PS5 Slim console earlier this week, with the tech giant confirming that there will be two versions of the new PlayStation console, one with an attachable disc drive (that you can also buy separately) and one without, with the latter being called the Digital Edition. It also confirmed that once the supply of the current PS5 console runs out, the PS5 Slim console will replace it and will be the only console available to buy for the foreseeable future.

As we discovered in our PS5 Slim vs PS5 specs comparison, the consoles are very similar. But when looking at a PS5 Slim vs PS5 size comparison, there are some differences in regards to dimensions between the consoles.

PS5 Slim vs PS5 size comparison – the key differences

The form factor of the PS5 Slim is the key difference between that and the original PS5 console, with the former having a 30% reduction in volume and an 18-24% weight reduction, depending on which models you compare. The PS5 Slim weighs approximately 2.6 kg, which is 0.6 kg lighter than the standard PS5, which comes in at 3.2 kg.

This is also reflected in the dimensions as when you do a PS5 Slim vs PS5 size comparison, there's one big difference between the two. When the PS5 Slim console is on its side, the console has a height of 96 mm, whereas the standard PS5 console has a height of 80 mm in the same position, but the width and depth of both consoles are identical.

This means that when both consoles are upright, the PS5 Slim will be significantly smaller in terms of width, but it has the same height and depth as the standard PS5 console. Despite the fact that I don't own a PS5 console – I own an Xbox Series X console instead – I have occasionally had to place a PS5 next to it if I'm reviewing or playing PlayStation-exclusive games for work, and I really feel like Sony has missed an open goal here.

Compared to my current-gen Xbox, which has a height of just 300 mm compared to the PS5's 358 mm, the console's height and vampire-like collar design make it quite difficult to fit in small TV stands or under TVs, and even when you can, its unique (and frankly ugly) design means that it sticks out like a sore thumb. Reducing the width of the console makes little to no impact on its design, so clearly Sony is happy for its console to peacock in living rooms and bedrooms all over the world. But considering the door for a slight re-design was wide open, I'm a little disappointed that it didn't take that option, purely for aesthetic reasons.
