A full-scale invasion of Gaza by Israel appeared to draw closer tonight after the military announced a "significant ground operation" in the region.

The Israel Defence Forces said a new phase of action designed to "destroy" the Hamas militant group would involve attacks "from the air, sea and land".

Women and children were confirmed among the dead after civilian vehicles were blown up while being driven out of northern Gaza following an Israeli order to evacuate.

Palestinians started a mass exodus from after the Israeli Defence Forces warned that more than a million people should leave and head towards the south to "save their lives".

It comes as Israeli troops are bracing to launch a bloody ground attack on Hamas militants, having stepped up devastating artillery strikes on Gaza. In a statement the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) said it was "continuing to strike Hamas terror targets in the Gaza Strip". Their air force confirmed it had killed Ali Qadhi, the Hamas commander responsible for last week's cross-border attack on Israeli settlements.

Israeli media has reported the bodies of some of the Israelis seized by Hamas during its attack a week ago were recovered by the Israeli army during a ground raid on Gaza. Hundreds of Israeli civilians were slaughtered in the carefully planned attack as well as hostages being spirited back into the Palestinian territory.

Lack of water adds to misery in Gaza as Israeli airstrikes continue

Severe water shortages are worsening the situation in Gaza, leaving families struggling as missile strikes fall around their homes.

When water does trickle from pipes, it is said to last no more than 30 minutes each day and is so contaminated with sewage and seawater that it's undrinkable, according to residents.

Laila Abu Samhadaneh, 65, said from her three-room home in the southern town of Rafah: "I don't know what we're going to do tomorrow, we're going crazy."

The UN Palestinian refugee agency has called the water crisis a "matter of life or death." Commissioner general Philippe Lazzarini has warned that "people will start dying of severe dehydration" if access is not restored soon.
