Conor McGregor admits he owes rival Nate Diaz trilogy fight in UFC return

Conor McGregor has admitted that he owes his rival Nate Diaz a trilogy fight, and called for his old rival to make the move back from boxing.

McGregor and Diaz have had a legendary feud that saw them fight twice in 2016, with the American winning first time out at UFC 196 and the reverse happening at UFC 202. But even though both men are keen to make a decider happen, the fight hasn't happened to date, with it seeming farther than ever from taking place.

Diaz has since left the promotion, and his last fight wasn't even in a cage as he took on Jake Paul, losing his boxing debut by unanimous decision. Meanwhile, McGregor has been out of action for over two years with a broken leg, and has yet to return to the USADA pool in order to get the ball rolling on his comeback fight with Michael Chandler.

Asked by Mirror Fighting last week at the launch of his Forged Irish Stout at Jack's Bar in London what he felt about Diaz's fight with Paul, McGregor said: “It was not great. I’d like to see him back in MMA. I owe him a fight. I owe Nate a fight. So I've got to obligate that you know? In [our] rematch I got the better of him and I owe him the trilogy for sure.”

During our exclusive chat, McGregor noted that his comeback fight "has to be" against Michael Chandler later this year, telling the former Bellator champion to wait his turn. However, Diaz has said that he feels that fight will never happen, although if it does he would back the Irishman.

“Chandler is a nice guy but he's going to get - he not going to win,” Diaz responded when asked by Mirror Fighting who he thinks will leave the fight victorious, before adding his bombshell: “I don't think they're going to fight though. They are not going to fight. Do you think they're going to fight?

"Does anyone think Conor and Chandler are going to fight? There's no bout agreement and just like the BMF belt [Diaz's custom title that was brought back last weekend for UFC 291] they didn't have nothing to entertain nobody so they're just like 'we've got to bring this up, we've got to put Conor on TV."
