Peter Kay swears at Paddy McGuinness as he shares biggest annoyance of pal
Peter Kay has been opening up about the struggles of working alongside Paddy McGuinness, who he starred alongside in comedy hit Phoenix Nights.
The funnyman roped in his schoolfriend to play his best pal Paddy O'Shea in the series, alongside Peter as fellow Bolton doorman Max Bygraves. Following the success of the series, the duo starred in their own-spin off Max and Paddy’s Road To Nowhere which began in 2004 and ran for just one series.
Despite the two friends branching out on their own, filming for the show was not entirely plain-sailing. Speaking about the experience in his new book TV: Big Adventures on the Small Screen, Peter says: “All I can remember is a lot of laughter. Especially from Paddy and me. That’s when he managed to turn up for filming. He was a bugger for being late in the morning.
According to Peter, 'Paddy slept in all the time,' causing headaches for the production crew. He explained: "We’d get a message from his driver picking him up: ‘He’s not answering the door.’ Eventually, he’d get to us, and we’d all be sat waiting because we couldn’t film anything without him. We were in every scene together. A right pain in the arse.”

He describes it as being a “huge beast” and he found it difficult to park which proved expensive. Kay adds: “I was forever hitting walls and clipping other vehicles as we drove past, leaving the art department with their heads in their hands. They spent a lot of time leaving notes under people’s windscreen wipers with our insurance details or knocking on residents’ doors, apologising and advising that someone would be calling round to fix their wall or fence.

The Max and Paddy series had been a huge hit for Channel 4, with the first episode attracting over four million viewers. But the six-part series hasn’t been brought back, despite its fan-base.
Peter has revealed previously he did write more episodes but Paddy’s success hosting ITV ’s Saturday night dating series Take Me Out that’s put a spanner in the works.
He said: “We had a really good laugh and we wrote more series… We wrote more specials but we’ve never got together and made them because of Take Me Out.”

According to Paddy the two of them are still close and he says he is "very proud" of Peter's success. When Peter's comeback tour was first announced last year, Paddy publicly showed his support for his pal on Instagram.
Dad of three Paddy said: "I don’t often speak about Pete and his achievements on my socials. He’s been a mate since childhood and that’s how I always see him.
"Regardless of all the great things he’s achieved on television there’s literally no one who comes close to what he does live. The amount of tickets he sells is unheard of in the comedy world and beyond!
"He’s a one off folks, enjoy him, I don’t think you’ll see the likes of him again. Certainly not in our lifetime. I’m very proud you son. "PS I haven’t got tickets. PPS I don’t need any."
