Jonnie Irwin is making his long-awaited return to TV after his devastating terminal cancer diagnosis.

The presenter, 49, is back on TV screens on Monday, as he returns to host a new episode of Escape to the Country on BBC One which airs at 3pm today. Jonnie, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2020, took to social media to share the exciting news, as he revealed he would be back helping house hunters find their dream home in the popular daytime series. Sharing a slideshow of snaps from behind the scenes, he looked happy as he got back to his day job.

“Good news to start the week, there’s a brand new episode of @escape_country airing tomorrow on @bbcone at 3 pm and it’s one of mine! I head down to Somerset and look at some fantastic rural properties in some beautiful locations. Plus I also get to visit a cider farm- perks of the job. Hope you enjoy!”, Jonnie captioned the post. He was soon inundated with well wishes from fans, who welcomed his return to daytime TV.

The father-of-three was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 2020, and in November last year he went public with the news, and revealed it has now spread to his brain. Jonnie also used to present A Place in the Sun on Channel 4, and stunned fans when he claimed he was axed from the travel programme shortly after he told bosses about his cancer diagnosis.

He told The Sun last year that producers paid him off and failed to renew his contract, even though he was desperate to stay on in his role as co-host.

He said: “As soon as I told A Place In The Sun about my diagnosis they paid me for the rest of the season but didn’t renew my contract. They knew I wanted to carry on. That hurt. That broke my heart. I feel hugely let down. I can’t even watch the show now.”

He said that prompted him to keep his cancer diagnosis a secret, as he feared he would lose more work if he was honest about his health. “Within two weeks someone else was on TV doing my job. I just feel I earned a bit more from them after 18 years. That was my first job in TV and it was special to me,” he fumed. Jonnie has since returned to work on Escape to the Country, and praised the BBC show for continuing to employ him after going public with his diagnosis.
