Andre Onana has apologised to his Manchester United team-mates and the club’s fans for his blunder in the defeat by Bayern Munich.

Onana allowed Leroy Sane’s shot to squirm under his body, giving Bayern a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute on Wednesday night. United went on to lose the game 4-3 as their defensive problems continued to undermine Erik ten Hag’s side.

Serge Gnabry finished into the bottom corner for 2-0 before Rasmus Hojlund’s scrappy finish gave them hope. But Christian Eriksen’s handball allowed Harry Kane to score from the penalty spot and Casemiro’s two late goals were cancelled out by Mathys Tel’s stunning strike.

After the match, much of the focus fell on Onana’s mistake, which allowed the floodgates to open. The Cameroon international joined United in a £47milliion transfer from Inter Milan in July and has struggled for consistency in between the posts.

He opened up on those struggles to TNT Sports. “In the beginning we start really good. After my mistake we lose the control of the game,” he admitted. “It’s a difficult situation for us, for me, especially because I’m the one who let the team down. But the team was very good, I think it was because of me that we didn’t win this game.

“I’m happy for the work of the team and we just have to move on. This is the life of a goalkeeper. If we didn’t win today it’s because of me.”

Asked if he was solely responsible for the first goal, Onana said: “I think yes. We were very good on the ball, the first shot on target I made a mistake. It was the key point in the game, the team went one down because of that mistake so I have to learn from it, be strong, move on.

"It’s not an easy situation but I’m very happy for the comeback of the team – we were fighting to the very end, but I have to recognise that because of me we didn’t win.”

Asked if he had a lot to prove to the fans, he replied: “Of course, I have a lot to prove because to be honest, my start in Manchester is not so good, it’s not how I want. To play how I played today is one of my worst games and it’s difficult because have big ambitions. We are a very big club and you want to win everything.

“It was a big opportunity for us to bounce back after the situation we are facing. It’s tough and we have to be together, continue what we are doing and learn from our mistakes because it’s the only thing to do.”

United have now lost three games in succession, conceding 10 goals in the process against Arsenal, Brighton and Bayern. They are back in action against Premier League strugglers Burnley on Saturday evening.
