Manchester United stars Raphael Varane and Mason Mount have returned to training ahead of Wednesday's mouth-watering Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

Defender Varane and midfielder Mount have both been absent for much of the past month, increasing Erik ten Hag's injury list which at one point had 11 players' names on once it was confirmed that right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka would be out for two months. Now though, the pair are back in contention ahead of the trip to Germany which will mark United's return to Europe's elite competition.

Not only that but the Red Devils have also been boosted by midfield duo Sofyan Amrabat and Kobbie Mainoo each training separately as they close in on full fitness. New signing Amrabat, who joined on loan from Fiorentina on transfer deadline day, has been unable to make his debut because of a back issue, while Mainoo suffered an ankle injury against Real Madrid in pre-season.

The 18-year-old and Amrabat were back on the grass as the Red Devils prepared for their group-stage opener in rainy Manchester on Tuesday, and Varane and Mount were spotted amongst their team-mates. French centre-back Varane has only missed United's last two matches - both 3-1 defeats to Arsenal and then Brighton - after being forced off at half-time during August's 3-2 comeback win at home to Nottingham Forest.

England international Mount didn't feature in the Forest clash after sustaining a hamstring injury and his last appearance came in the Red Devils' dismal 2-0 loss away to Tottenham. Ten Hag will hope to welcome Varane and Mount back to face Bayern, who themselves have received three boosts on the injury front.

Midfield linchpin Joshua Kimmich had to be subbed off during the Bundesliga champions' 2-2 draw at home to Bayer Leverkusen on Friday, having previously been a doubt for the fixture, but he was seen training on Tuesday. The German, 28, was joined by team-mates Kingsley Coman and Raphael Guerreiro, who are returning from injury.

French forward Coman has often been linked with a move to United in recent years but remained with Bayern after scoring the goal which saw them win the Champions League in 2020. Guerreiro, meanwhile, is yet to make his debut since signing from arch rivals Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer when his contract expired in June.

Manager Thomas Tuchel won't be on the touchline because of a one-match UEFA ban which he earned after being sent off during last season's convincing quarter-final defeat to Manchester City. Tuchel will be relying on star striker Harry Kane to lead the line, having scored four goals in his first five appearances for Bayern since completing a transfer worth in excess of £100million.

Kane was a target for United in the early stages of the summer transfer window but ultimately made the move to Bavaria. "I know there were some talks between a few clubs in the background," the former Tottenham striker explained during Tuesday's pre-match press conference.

"There weren't really too many other discussions once Bayern came in. Manchester United are a great club, really big club, but I decided to come here."
