Katherine Ryan on 'confronting celeb sexual predator' clip resurfaces online

A clip of Katherine Ryan saying she confronted a male comedian who she dubbed a "sexual predator" has resurfaced.

The Canadian comic made the claims during an interview with BBC documentary maker Louis Theroux in November 2022. Although she has never named the "unmentionable British personality" for legal reasons, The Duchess star claimed it was an "open secret" amongst people working in her industry.

She made clear that she was not a victim of sexual assault herself – saying it was "not my story to tell" – but believed accusations from sources she described as "very credible". The 40-year-old said that while she didn’t inform this person’s employers of their alleged behaviour, she told the man repeatedly "to his face" during filming for a TV show. The clip was later cut from the recording.

However, it is not clear who the celebrity is and Katherine did not disclose their identity.

In the BBC documentary, Louis asked Katherine: “You were in the papers recently for saying there was a predator that you had worked with and that you had informed his employers that he was a predator?” Katherine replied: “I didn’t inform employers, I informed him to his face that he was a predator.” Asked what she meant by the word ‘predator’, she explained: “I mean, a perpetrator of sexual assault.”

The star went on to say that it was “very dangerous” for her to have the conversation with Louis “but I’m happy to have it”. She described it as a “litigious minefield”, adding “Lots of people have tried to nail this person down for their alleged crimes.”

Revealing why she can’t name the person publicly, Katherine told Louis: “This person has very good lawyers, so am I going to put my mortgage on the line by saying who this person is or entering into any conversations like that? We’ve seen what happens to people who talk about alleged predators.

"It’s not really my story to tell. No one has perpetrated any sexual assaults against me, but this person I believe very strongly – so do a lot of people, it’s an open secret – is a perpetrator of sexual assault.” Katherine revealed she said “in front of loads of people” during the filming of a TV show to this person’s face that he was a predator. However, the clip was later cut from the recording so has never been seen publicly.

She continued: “It’s fine. I still got paid and I still did my job and I did it in my way, that I felt was fair. This is what we talk about, this is what female comics and probably actresses and women in my industry talk about all the time because that’s the safest way for us to talk about it. I didn’t tell any employer or blow a whistle... I handled it, for want of a better term, like a man and said it to his face."

The star added: “Every time these things are eventually proven. You look at Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein, and the unmentionable British personality, everybody knew! So I didn’t mean to cause a stir about it. I say things as they are.”
