The PlayStation State of Play confirmed that the massive multiplayer title is finally arriving on PS4 (and therefore PS5 too) just over 17 years after the game first launched.

The PlayStation State of Play event this week had some huge announcements for titles like Resident Evil 4, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2. But the biggest game shown at the show was Roblox – which may not be the biggest deal for hardcore gamers but it apparently has around 66 million daily active users, so clearly it's a big deal.

While Roblox has been available on Xbox for a while, it's never made the jump to PlayStation. However, that's set to change next month as Roblox has been announced for PS4, with that version arriving next month on October 10, 2023, with crossplay available. And with the PS5 console able to play PS4 games, players who own the latest console won't miss out.

Roblox's Senior Director of Product Thai Bui went more in-depth about the release in a post on the PlayStation Blog. The post goes into detail about some of the experiences available on the platform like the library of experiences, in-depth customisation and extensive range of building tools. "Bring your ideas to life and express yourself," he enthused, in a tease to the PlayStation audience about what's to come.

If you build it

Though it might seem strange that Roblox is only making its debut on PlayStation via a PS4 version (instead of one for PS5 also) the studio knows exactly what it's doing. The former console has sold a staggering 117 million units, which is just under double the Roblox player base, to date, while PS5 currently sits in the region of 40 million lifetime sales. This is a move done to clearly reach the largest number of players possible, which I'm surprised has taken Roblox this long given that Xbox players have been able to jump in since 2015.

This leaves Nintendo Switch as the last major games console that Roblox won't be on, though players can still get their mobile fix thanks to the iOS and Android versions. Recent rumours that a Nintendo Switch 2 prototype was shown off to publishers at Gamescom casts this further in doubt, seeing as Roblox would likely rather target this Nintendo Switch successor if it intends to be playable on Nintendo at all.

Crossplay and cross-platform support are sure to help existing Roblox players engage with the new raft of PS4 players that will have access to the game on October 10, 2023.
