Another VMAs has come and gone, and the 2023 event will certainly be one to remember.

The annual celebration is always full of excitement but this year really did have a bit of everything - from backstage 'rows' and a seemingly missed award, to some VERY revealing outfits and a stunt which left viewers thinking disaster had claimed one performance.

And there were also some great moments from the audience, including Taylor Swift absolutely fan-girling over the NSYNC reunion and Selena Gomez's not-so-subtle savage reaction to Chris Brown getting a shout out.

So for those of you just waking up, here's a round up of everything you missed at the 2023 MTV VMAs.

Megan Thee Stallion v Justin Timberlake?

A backstage video from the evening appeared to show a tense moment between Megan Thee Stallion and Justin Timberlake. The video shows someone helping fix Megan's hair and applying spray to it. Then you see Megan raise her hand and holding up her index finger as she talked to someone off screen. The camera pans and you can see members of the boyband as they were walking by, and it appeared that she was talking to Justin who smiled and leaned in to say something.

She seemed to get annoyed, shaking her head and her hand as she talked animatedly. Then the rapper looks away and somewhat rolls her eyes and Twitter believed she looked annoyed and was "arguing". It then looked like NSYNC member Joey Fatone said something as well.

The clip had Twitter users thinking Justin said something to upset the Savage rapper. "Get him for Janet, Meg," one person tweeted, referencing the Super Bowl performance when a wardrobe malfunction caused Justin to accidentally reveal Janet Jackson's breast on television. Another said: "Going to side with [Megan]." The video didn't have sound, so it's unsure what exactly was said.

But apparently, it wasn't the row it looked like it was. According to Variety, a source backstage said there was "zero fight". This source supposedly witnessed the interaction, saying: "It was very cute." Reportedly, He said: "It's so nice to meet you,' and she said, 'No, no this don't count, this don't count. We gotta meet proper.'"

No official comment has been made from either Megan's team or Justin's.

Broken sets?

There was confusion during Olivia Rodrigo 's performance of her hit song Vampire.

The 20-year-old singer performed her latest hit Vampire to the packed-out New Jersey arena, sitting on the ground surrounded by foliage in a stunning red dress for the opening bars. However as the song went on, sparks and smoke started to fall from the ceiling. Olivia looked around the stage appearing concerned, but she continued to sing along.

Seconds later trees began to fall, resulting in a member of the crew running onto the stage and directing Olivia to leave. There were some panicked faces in the audience from stars and guests who didn't quite know what was going on.

But Olivia's true fans will know this was far from an accident, as it's actually exactly what happens in the Vampire music video. In fact, once the panic calmed people were full of praise for her dedication to recreate the video, and she certainly made her performance memorable.

During the stunt, the camera panned around the crowd to show audience members and celebs looking extremely concerned. Some even accused Selena Gomez of "throwing shade" at Olivia due to her facial expressions at that moment. She also appeared to be covering her ears. But other fans were quick to point out that she actually just looked worried, and she was probably just covering her ears because of the loud bangs from the collapsing set.

Artist of the Year?

Usually one of the biggest awards of the night, there was a lot of confusion when organisers seemed to completely miss the award from this year's event. Taylor Swift, Doja Cat, Beyonce, Karol G, Nicki Minaj and Shakira were all nominated, but the announcement simply never came.

Fans took to Twitter to ask what had happened.

One wrote: "Wait, did they just forget to announce Artist of the Year!?!?!?"

Another added: "did I miss the artist of the year award??? what’s the point of an award show if you don’t present all the awards?"

However the event's website was later updated to confirm that Taylor Swift won.

NSYNC reunited - but didn't perform

Every 90s kid in the VMAs audience - including Taylor Swift - lost their minds when Justin Timberlake, Lance Bass, Chris Kirkpatrick, JC Chasez, and Joey Fatone walked out onto the stage.

It's been over a decade since the group went their separate ways. So fans hoped they were using the surprise appearance to perform or announce a comeback - but nothing.

Even Taylor was left questioning what was going on, asking the group: "What's going to happen now? They're doing something and I need to know what it is. You're pop personified so to receive this from your golden pop hands - it's too much."

But to many viewers' dismay, the group did nothing but present the award to Taylor and give her a heartfelt gift. MTV fans flocked to Twitter to share their thoughts on the on-stage reunion and their shock that the group didn't perform.

One fan wrote: "They better announce something! STG"

Another added: "So I sat through 4 hrs of VMAs waiting for NSYNC to perform??"

And a third said: "Are we supposed to just move on from this NSYNC reunion?"

Selena Gomez's savage reaction to Chris Brown

Eagle-eyed viewers were quick to spot Selena's reaction to singer Chris Brown's name being read out in the list of nominees for one categories, and it's fair to say she was less than impressed.

The Only Murders In The Building Star went viral on social media after she was caught sneering at the artist's nomination for his song "How Does It Feel,” on which he collaborated with Chlöe Bailey. But The Moon Man award ultimately went to SZA for “Shirt", helping to avoid any more awkward encounters on social media.

The Single Soon songstress, 31, stunned on the red carpet as she wore a halter-neck red Oscar de la Renta gown with a floral pattern and fringe, that she paired with red heels.

Gomez is nominated for three awards at the event, including Song of the Year, Best Collaboration and Best Afrobeats for her song 'Calm Down' with Rema.

Fans were left in stitches at her reaction, with one viewer tweeting: "SHE'S SO REAL FOR THIS I LOVE HER."

Another said: "She just came to make shady faces."
