It's almost time for this year's MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), with various artists set to take to the stage during the annual celebration of talent in the music industry.

The event - which honours "the best music videos of the past year" - will be held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, next week. Nicki Minaj has been announced as the show's emcee, with her also set to perform during the event.

Ahead of the ceremony, MTV - which has run the awards show since it debuted in 1984 - has teased that viewers can expect "unforgettable performances, epic tributes and showstopping appearances from music's biggest stars".

So who will be performing at the VMAs this year? And which celebrities are going to feature as presenters? We've put together a guide to the upcoming awards ceremony, so that you know a little bit more about to expect from the show.

Who will be performing?

A number of acts are set to perform this year, with the pre-show scheduled to feature Sabrina Carpenter and NLE Choppa, for example. Kaliii, Reneé Rapp and The Warning will perform on Extended Play Stage presented by Doritos.

There's due to be performances by Doja Cat, Demi Lovato and Måneskin during the main show. It will also feature performances by acts such as Olivia Rodrigo, Anitta, Karol G, Kelsea Ballerini, Lil Wayne, Stray Kids and Tomorrow X Together. Nicki Minaj, who is the show's emcee, is also set to perform.

Viewers can also expect to see both Shakira and Diddy take to the stage at the venue, as the singer and the rapper are scheduled to give respective performances too. They are both honourees at the awards ceremony this year.

Who are the presenters?

The pre-show, which is scheduled to run for an hour and a half, will be fronted by Saweetie. The rapper is due to be supported at the event, which will air directly before the main show, by Nessa, Dometi Pongo and Kevan Kenney.

MTV has announced that presenters during the main show will include actors like Jared Leto, Emily Ratajkowski and Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline. Others presenters are set to include Bebe Rexha, Rita Ora and French Montana.

Various other well-known individuals are due to present awards during the awards ceremony next week, including rapper Ice Spice and content creator Charli D'Amelio.

Numerous awards are presented during the VMAs each year, with most of the categories open to a public vote. The nominees for this year's event were announced last month, with Taylor Swift leading the way with eight nominations.

The awards set to be given out during the ceremony include Best New Artist, Group of the Year, Song of the Summer, Album of the Year and Video of the Year. Others include Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Collaboration.

There are also categories celebrating songs in a variety of genres, as well as an award for Show of the Summer. MTV will be also be awarding Video for Good and PUSH Performance of the Year at some point in the ceremony.

There are also a series of "professional categories," which don't feature a public vote. They consist of awards for Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Choreography, Best Art Direction and Best Editing.

It has already been announced that Shakira will receive the Video Vanguard Award. The accolade - previously given to artists like Janet Jackson - is said to be a lifetime achievement honour for "outstanding contributions and profound impact on music video and popular culture".

Diddy - also known as Sean Combs - will be given the Global Icon Award. It's been shared that he's the recipient for "his unparalleled career and continued influence that has achieved unrivaled global success in music and beyond."

How can you watch?

MTV previously announced that this year's VMAs will be available in more than 150 countries and territories through its various outlets, including its digital platforms. The show is due to be broadcast live in some instances.

This includes in the US, where the VMAs will air live on Tuesday (September 12). The pre-show will air from 6.30pm to 8pm ET/PT on MTV, MTV2, CMT and Logo. The main show will then premiere on MTV, for example, at 8pm ET/PT.

Fans in the UK however will have to wait until the following night to watch the event. The pre-show will air on MTV UK and Pluto TV at 9pm on Wednesday (September 13), before the main show begins at 10.30pm. MTV has announced that the awards ceremony will later be on Paramount+ UK on September 19.
