USC star quarterback Caleb Williams revealed the goal of his NFL career is surpassing Tom Brady by winning eight Super Bowl championships.

Williams transferred to USC from Oklahoma with head coach Lincoln Riley ahead of the 2022 college season and quickly established himself as one of the college game’s best signal-callers. He became the first USC player to win the Heisman Trophy since Reggie Bush in 2005 and will look to pick up from where he left off when the 2023 campaign kicks off.

Williams dominated in just his second season at the collegiate level as he threw 42 touchdowns to just five interceptions while adding 10 scores on the ground. He completed 66.6 percent of his passes for 4,537 yards during his banner season, leading USC to an 11-3 record and a spot in the Pac-12 title game.

As a result of his explosive play, Williams has received favourable comparisons to two-time MVP Patrick Mahomes as both quarterbacks use their legs to get away from pressure before pulling off remarkable throws from unusual angles. However, the coveted 21-year-old prospect has his eyes on another all-time great quarterback as he prepares to step into the NFL.

Speaking in an interview with GQ Magazine, Williams shared a number of goals he has for his impending NFL career, mentioning he wants to win eight Super Bowls. When asked why eight, Williams quickly declared: “Tom Brady has seven. So you got to set the bar high.”

Williams will enter a Brady-less NFL. The iconic quarterback called time on his 23-year career back in February, retiring as a seven-time Super Bowl champion following successful stints with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Brady spent his first 20 seasons in New England, winning six Super Bowls before concluding his career with the Buccaneers, where he won a seventh Lombardi Trophy. The 46-year-old is the only player to win more than five Super Bowls in his career, and he has been named Super Bowl MVP on five occasions times.

Brady also retired as the league’s all-time leader in passing yards (89,214), touchdown passes (649), regular season wins (251) and a number of other records to be considered by many as the greatest quarterback in NFL history. He is the gold-standard of quarterback play, and Williams is keen to chase his records down.

Ultimately, the quarterback position is one of the hardest in sports. Success invariably depends on other factors, including the team’s performance, coaching and overall circumstances on and off the field.

If Williams lands in the perfect spot, he could thrive and find himself alongside Mahomes in chasing Brady down. Several franchises will likely look to secure the top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft in order to pick the reigning Heisman Trophy star, provided he excels in 2023 as expected.
