Ghosts star Kiell Smith-Bynoe furious after losing to Young Sheldon at NTAs
Ghosts star Kiell Smith-Bynoe has vented his fury after his show lost out to US sitcom Young Sheldon at the National Television Awards.
The critically-acclaimed BBC comedy, which also stars Lolly Adefope, Charlotte Ritchie and Mathew Baynton, was one of the favourites to win the top comedy gong at the star-studded ceremony in London on Tuesday, despite stiff competition from Brassic and Ted Lasso. However, Young Sheldon - a spin-off from the hugely successful sitcom The Big Bang Theory - was named winner in a shock result, prompting outrage from fans, with many calling for UK-only shows to be nominated in future.
Kiell Smith-Bynoe, who plays Mike Cooper in Ghosts, took to social media to share his frustration after the show, which is set to end after the upcoming fifth series, lost out during the ceremony. “Wait what. I thought we’d lose to Ted Lasso not a f**kin spin off,” he tweeted. He then posted a picture of Young Sheldon with the caption: “Attenzione pickpocket!!” His followers shared the same sentiment, as they were gobsmacked Ghosts had lost out to a sitcom, which until recently aired on E4.
“There’s injustice and then there’s INJUSTICE,” one fumed in the replies. “Unacceptable result. Gutted for you all,” another added. “GHOSTS AND TED LASSO LOSING THE NTA TO YOUNG SHELDON?!?! WHAT KINDA OF SICK SAD WORLD SO WE LIVE IN,” a heartbroken fan shared, while another touched upon the obscurity of the US show in the UK. “How did Young Sheldon which no one has ever watched beat Ted Lasso and Ghosts?” they asked.
Young Sheldon focuses on the early life of Sheldon Cooper, one of the main characters in The Big Bang Theory, but some have criticised the show, with many claiming it mocks people who are neurodivergent. “I can't believe that Ghosts lost to a damaging portrayal of neurodivergent individuals, with your own lovely portrayal that has given such people (myself included) a safe space to express themselves in,” another fan fumed. “I don't think ANYONE expected bloody YOUNG SHELDON to win! Just a total mess!” one tweeted.

Some viewers called for the NTAs to ban American shows from being nominated, with one tweeting: “Next years NTA’s - can they please keep it the NATIONAL television awards and not have american netflix shows like stranger things and young sheldon nominated again please?”
The awards were full of surprises on Tuesday evening, with This Morning beaten by The Repair Shop, and The Graham Norton Show winning its first ever award, while Happy Valley’s Sarah Lancashire who was honoured with the Special Recognition Award.
