Manchester United have posted the highest net spend of any club in the world over the past decade, according to a new report.

But Premier League rivals Chelsea have committed the most on fees since 2014 - only to do a better job at recouping money through sales. And the CIES Football Observatory report found that nine Premier League sides are in the top 12 of net spend losses with only Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Milan breaking the English clubs up. And not a single one is in the top 20 clubs to have made a profit.

United lead the way when it comes to losses by a significant distance as their negative net spend has now hit £1.2bn. They have spent £1.67bn on new signings since 2014 and only made £482m from sales.

The club remains in a state of flux with latest indications suggesting the Glazer family are no longer intending to sell them having announced 10 months ago that they were "exploring strategic alternatives"

Chelsea, who have spent more than £1bn in the past three widows, have recorded the second biggest negative but their outlay has reached an eye-watering £2.25bn, offset by £1.37bn earned in sales.

PSG occupy third spot with losses of £915m ahead of Arsenal (£745m), Manchester City (£732m) and nouveau riche Newcastle United (£574m).

The other English teams in the top 20 are Tottenham Hotspur (8th, £520m), West Ham (10th, £450m), Aston Villa (11th, £412m), Liverpool (12th, £394m), Everton (15th, £335m), Crystal Palace (16th, £321m), Bournemouth (17th, £294m) and Nottingham Forest (20th, £265m).

Portugal dominates when it comes to the most profitable clubs with three Primeira Liga sides among the top six. Benfica, whose recent sales include Darwin Nunez and Enzo Fernandez, have banked £1.13bn in sales to turn a net profit of £653m.

Ajax, who have recently sold Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez to West Ham and Antony to Manchester United last summer, are next best on £371m with RB Salzburg third on £360m. They are followed by Monaco (£344m), Sporting Lisbon (£321m) and Porto (£301m).

CIES said: “The figures published include fixed transfer fees, any add-ons regardless of whether they have actually been paid, as well as sums invested in the context of paying loans.

"Amounts negotiated for loans with an obligation to buy are included in the breakdown for the year of the transfer. Within the limits of available information, the data on beneficiaries considers sell-on fees negotiated by previous clubs.

“The football transfer market is becoming increasingly structured around a small number of "buying" clubs, led by the English Premier League, and a much larger number of "selling" ones.

"The latter are targeting their recruitment at up-and-coming players, who they are likely to quickly transfer if they perform well, in a highly speculative environment involving ever-increasing and intense player mobility on a global scale.”
