Lidl has had to recall a popular snack as it could cause those who eat it to become ill.

The discount supermarket chain has been forced to recall its McEnnedy Corn Dogs as it was found to contain Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. According to the NHS website, Listeriosis is a rare infection caused by bacteria called listeria and if consumed, people could then experience high temperatures, muscle aches or pains, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.

For most people, listeriosis is mild and gets better in a few days. and you can usually look after yourself at home by resting and drinking plenty of fluids. However, in some severe cases involving vulnerable people, the infection can cause serious complications, such as sepsis meningitis.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said certain groups of people were more at risk of listeria infections. These include those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one-month-old and people with weakened immune systems.

The product affected by the recall is 530g and has the best before date of April 28 2024, June 10 2024 and August 10 2024. The McEnnedy Corn Dogs retail at £4.99 in Lidl stores.

The Food Standards Agency issued a warning over the products, this week. In its statement, the FSA said: "Lidl is recalling McEnnedy Corn Dogs because Listeria monocytogenes has been found in the product and accompanying sauce." The FSA has warned customers not to eat the product if they have purchased it.

Lidl has issued point-of-sale notices that will be displayed where the product was sold. These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.

The supermarket has also "apologised for any inconvenience caused" and said consumers can return the product to their nearest Lidl store for a full refund, even without a receipt. Lidl has also confirmed that no other McEnnedy products or BBDs in Lidl stores are affected by the recall.

For more information on the product recall, shoppers can contact Lidl's Customer Care team through email on [email protected] or call on 0203 966 5566.
