Hollywood superstar Owen Wilson insists that Lionel Messi is having a bigger impact in the United States than Pele!

The Argentine icon's star power was plain to see during Inter Miami's clash with LAFC as A-Listers turned out in force. From Leonardo DiCaprio and Selena Gomez to Prince Harry and LeBron James, the stands at BMO Stadium were brimming with world-famous faces.

Among them was comedy actor Wilson, who appeared to relish the opportunity to watch the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner in the flesh. Now the Marley and Me favourite has reflected on a memorable night under the lights in California.

Of course, the funnyman is used to the experience of fame but even he seemed to be awe-struck by the World Cup winner's allure. Now describing the spectacle, he has compared the arrival of the 37-year-old stateside to that of a legend of yesteryear.

Speaking to Fox News, the Wedding Crashers star described his verdict on how he views the megastar's impact: "I remember as a kid it was such a huge deal when Pele played for the [New York] Cosmos, and it feels like that again with Messi except maybe even bigger.

"I think it’s already doing it for the MLS. You can see the excitement. I had a friend in Dallas, them going to the games. Just all over country. Even my mother is now really into it."

Although the former Barcelona hero failed to find the net against LAFC, he lived up to his billing with a man-of-the-match display. The Herons eventually earned a crucial 3-1 away victory over their MLS rivals, with Messi contributing two assists.

The star of The Grand Budapest Hotel made no secret of his excitement at seeing the iconic winger in person in LA. When asked about the prospect prior to the the actor said: "[Lionel] Messi is my favourite player in the world.

The 54-year-old added: "I was so happy when Argentina won the World Cup. I cannot wait to see Messi in person tonight. I'm like a little kid on Christmas!"

The popular comedian was not left disappointed following the game either as he shared a warm embrace with the forward himself. Wilson made his way towards pitchside alongside his children after Miami's victory was confirmed.

Messi seemingly recognised the world-renowned star among a small crowd that had gathered by this point. Making an approach towards the actor, he shook his hand before they shared a memorable heart-warming hug.
