The onset of jaundice, pain in the upper right abdomen, and a swollen stomach (jaundice) are key signs of acute liver failure. More general symptoms include nausea, vomiting, malaise, disorientation, sleepiness, and tremors. Acute liver failure may also cause a person's breath to have a musty or sweet odor.

More general liver problems and disease, whether genetic or developed, may also result in eventual liver failure. In addition to the symptoms of acute liver failure, liver disease can cause swelling in the legs, itchy skin, dark urine, pale stool, chronic fatigue, loss of appetite, and easy bruising, according to Mayo Clinic.

The clinic website says: "Over time, conditions that damage the liver can lead to scarring (cirrhosis), which can lead to liver failure, a life-threatening condition. But early treatment may give the liver time to heal."
